Your packaging sample can look perfect and still fail at quoting, production or in the container. Most of those problems are decided before the sample is even made.

When packaging is sourced alongside the product, five decisions shape the sample, the quote and the shipment:

🔹 Material: paperboard, corrugated, plastic or non-woven. Choose by what the product needs protecting from.
🔹 Structure and size: box or bag style, inserts and inner dimensions. Fit the product and the units per export carton.
🔹 Print and finish: colours look different on screen and on paper. Approve a printed sample, not only a PDF proof.
🔹 MOQ and lead time: custom packaging has its own MOQ and lead time. Plan it into the production schedule.
🔹 Export packing: retail packaging still has to survive the container. Agree inner packs, cartons and marks early.

Agree these early and suppliers can quote accurately, samples come back closer to what you expect, and production runs without last-minute packaging changes.

Get it right before the first sample. Send us your product and target market, and we'll help you settle all five before suppliers quote. Free sourcing consultation: https://chinasourcing.co

China proposes new measures against foreign entities over trade-secret infringement.
What should international buyers know?

On 26 October, China’s Ministry of Commerce released draft provisions that could introduce trade and investment restrictions against foreign organisations or individuals whose infringement of Chinese trade secrets threatens China’s sovereignty, security or development interests.

The proposal reflects China's focus on protecting commercial interests, supporting fair business practices and safeguarding the trade and investment environment

For buyers and manufacturers, the announcement puts a familiar issue back in focus: how confidential information is shared, used and protected across supplier relationships.
From technical drawings to proprietary production methods, both sides need clear boundaries.

Now is a good time to review:
🔹 Who can access sensitive project information, including subcontractors.
🔹 How agreements define confidentiality, ownership and permitted use.
🔹 When detailed specifications are shared during supplier selection.
🔹 How approved drawings and production changes are documented.

As trade rules and commercial expectations evolve, the ability to manage supplier relationships professionally becomes increasingly valuable.
The latest trade secret proposal is a reminder that confidential information deserves careful attention throughout international manufacturing relationships.
For buyers, the practical response is to strengthen supplier evaluation, establish clear agreements and maintain accurate documentation.

Global Shipping Rates Are Shifting. Is Your Sourcing Strategy Ready?

Shipping costs and container availability continue to vary across major trade routes, creating new challenges for businesses importing from Asia.

The lowest freight quote doesn't always mean the lowest total cost. Container availability, vessel schedules, port congestion and rollover risks can all affect your final landed cost and delivery timeline.

Effective sourcing goes beyond finding the right manufacturer. It also means planning shipments carefully, coordinating suppliers and anticipating logistics challenges before they affect your business.
🔹 Plan ahead for peak-season shipments.
🔹 Monitor freight trends and changing capacity.
🔹 Coordinate production and shipping to reduce avoidable delays.

In global sourcing, better planning can make the difference between a smooth shipment and an expensive setback.

When international businesses think about sourcing from China, it’s tempting to look for a single, simple “China strategy.”

But the reality? China is not a uniform market. Each region operates differently and recognizing those differences is the key to sourcing success.
🔹 In Tier 1 cities like Shanghai or Shenzhen:
- Fast-paced, globally connected
- Easier to access hybrid work models & English-speaking talent
- Stronger exposure to international trends

🔹 In smaller cities like Zhenjiang or Wuhan:
- Business feels more local & relationship-driven
- Dialects and local practices matter more
- People tend to be more open and curious

And yet, across the country, one thing is consistent: rapid digital adoption — from mobile payments to livestream commerce, China moves fast.

At China Sourcing Co, we see these differences on the ground every day. A supplier in Shenzhen might prioritize speed and innovation, while one in Shandong may emphasize tradition and stability. What works in one region may not work in another.

That’s why the companies who thrive are those that:
- Listen carefully to local nuances
- Adapt to each supplier’s context and culture
- Build flexibility into their sourcing strategy

China isn’t just one story. It’s a mosaic of markets, people, and ways of doing business. Success comes from understanding how to navigate them.
👉 If you’re sourcing from China, how are you adjusting your strategy to match the region you’re working in?

At China Sourcing Co, we’ve seen too many companies lose money or time because they relied only on emails or unverified suppliers. That’s why our role goes beyond introductions — we vet factories, conduct on-the-ground quality checks, and keep communication transparent so clients avoid the costly traps of going solo.

Here are a few sourcing principles we always emphasize:
🔹 Work only with verified, legitimate suppliers who can provide complete company and product details.
🔹 Perform due diligence - Visit the factory, inspect quality, and verify qualifications before committing.
🔹 Keep clear communication and records - it makes resolving issues faster and safer.

This is exactly where we come in: our team in China helps global businesses secure reliable partners, streamline supply chains, and protect themselves from risks.

Have you ever faced challenges when sourcing from China? If yes, what was your biggest lesson?

China remains the world’s largest exporter of building materials, accounting for over 30% of the global supply.

One of the key reasons building materials sourcing in China is cost-effective lies in its ability to produce goods at scale. With over 400 million people employed in China’s industrial sector, labor costs remain much lower ($6/hour) than in Western countries. This lower labor cost allows Chinese factories to produce materials at highly competitive prices, making building materials sourcing in China an attractive option for construction firms looking to maintain profitability while sourcing high-quality materials.

Think lead time is just the factory’s production time?
Most importers learn the hard way - it’s not.

Many buyers hear “30-day lead time” and assume delivery in 30 days.
In reality, total delivery time can stretch to 45-50+ days if you don’t break down the full process.

Here’s what real “lead time” actually includes:
🔹 Order processing & confirmation (2–3 days)
🔹 Raw material procurement (5–15 days)
🔹 Production queue time (varies heavily by season)
🔹 Manufacturing (the quoted lead time)
🔹 Quality inspection & packaging (2–5 days)
🔹 Shipping & transit (7–30 days, depending on method)

The truth:
A supplier’s “lead time” = manufacturing only.
Your actual delivery timeline = manufacturing + all the other components above.

At China Sourcing Co, this is one of the biggest misunderstandings we fix for new clients. Once we map out the full timeline, delays suddenly become predictable - not painful surprises.
