Some motorcycle brands evoke a strong sense of adventure, brotherhood & the sheer pleasure of riding. One of them is Harley-Davidson – a brand so deeply rooted in popular culture that even people who have never ridden one know exactly what it represents – an unmistakable thump, a rebellious identity & a rich legacy.
Hero & Harley first brought the formula with the X440, before expanding the line-up with the X440 T. After 437km on the saddle, it’s clear this machine has a lot going for it.
The first thing you notice is its design. The tweaked rear end, with its sleeker tail section, integrated tail lamp & grab rails, ties the whole silhouette together beautifully. The inspiration from XR1200 is apparent & the overall fit-and-finish – including the switchgear, foot pegs & chassis welds – feels premium & worthy of the badge.
From the moment it fires up, the 440cc engine settles into a deep, bassy thump, reminding you of how a Harley should feel & sound. Once you get going, the wave of torque comes in early, making it easy to ride through the city, and highway overtakes take little effort, too.
Riding in road mode keeps things light & breezy. In the rain mode, the power delivery is dialled down & becomes smoother. The traction control isn’t intrusive, but it does make its presence felt. And of course, the ‘thumpy’ note in the background makes it easy to spend time riding the bike for long hours.
That said, our first impression isn’t flawless. The seat is on the narrower side, fine for short city spins but causes discomfort on longer stints. The front suspension, while tweaked for sportier riding compared to the X440, feels relatively stiff over sharp potholes at speed, sending noticeable jolts through the handlebar. At 192kg, the weight is noticeable at low speeds and in tight parking & manoeuvring situations.
Summing it up, few motorcycles in this segment command such strong street presence. The idea is to log decent mileage on the X440 T over the next few months & keep an eye on its performance & durability.
