📢 One Step Closer to Safer, Smarter Drone Operations

The 3rd edition of ISO 21384-3, the international standard for operations, has been published in August 2026 by ISO/TC 20/SC 16 – Uncrewed Aircraft Systems.
The standard, developed by Working Group 3, whose Convenor is Filippo Tomasello, Senior Advisor at Unifly Consulting, introduces significant revisions to reflect the evolving UAS operational landscape.

Among the key updates, the new edition:

🔹 structures requirements around the Open, Specific and Certified Categories;

🔹 introduces detailed medical fitness requirements for remote pilots and other operational personnel;

🔹 defines the roles and tasks of different types of Visual Observers;

🔹 introduces the role of the Fleet Manager, building on concepts developed through the EU-funded Flying Forward 2020 project, in which Unifly Consulting was a partner;

🔹 accommodates different levels of automation, including fully autonomous UAS operations.

Importantly, certification against ISO 21384-3 may support authorities in their oversight activities and, in the EU, may provide credit in relation to the requirements applicable to operations in the Certified Category.

“I am very pleased not only with the publication of this 3rd edition, but also to see that UAS operators are already being certified against ISO 21384-3 worldwide.”
Filippo Tomasello, Senior Advisor, Unifly Consulting

At Unifly Consulting, we can support organisations worldwide in achieving ISO 21384-3 certification through appropriately accredited certification bodies.

Achieving III is an important step towards enabling more complex and higher-value operations, expanding the range of missions that can be conducted safely under the European regulatory framework.

Reaching this level requires not only a robust operational concept, but also aircraft systems that are designed from the outset to meet the relevant safety and assurance objectives, supported by comprehensive evidence and documentation. As regulatory requirements continue to evolve, manufacturers who proactively integrate , and considerations into the design process will be best positioned to unlock new operational opportunities.

⚙️ At Unifly Consulting, we support manufacturers and operators throughout this process, from requirements identification and compliance strategy to the development of the evidence needed to demonstrate conformity with applicable objectives.
