The CBD Women's Caucus (CBD WC) is a self-organised global platform, under the scope of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), for all women and girls to advocate for their rights in biodiversity-related decision-making processes at all levels.

As the Kunming dialogue starts today— where we are gathering to discuss progress on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework — as we submitted 48 comments because gender justice can’t be a footnote in the Framework’s flagship progress report.

Here is what we are calling for:
1️⃣ Gender-disaggregated data across every target — not just Target 23
2️⃣ Traceable, gender-responsive funding that actually reaches women-led organizations
3️⃣ Meaningful participation to ensure gender justice — not just quotas
4️⃣ Recognized land, water and customary tenure rights for women
5️⃣ Real synergy with CEDAW, the Gender Plan of Action and the Rio Conventions

Gender justice is not only a fundamental human right — it is a necessary foundation for achieving the objectives of the KM-GBF, including its Target 23 and the Gender Plan of Action.

Today marks the International Day of Indigenous Women where women have always led in protecting biodiversity, preserving traditional knowledge, and sustaining their communities.

Indigenous women, as knowledge holders, stewards of biodiversity, and leaders in their own right, are the foundation of this work — not newly included, but always central to it.

The CBD Women’s Caucus has submitted our case studies on Traditional Knowledge, Innovations and Practices of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities to the CBD Secretariat for the KM-GBF Global Report.

12 case studies from Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America — seed banks in Mali, market governance in Indonesia, park stewardship on Rapa Nui, ecological knowledge in Cameroon, and more. Real, documented leadership by women from Indigenous people and local communities, now part of the record shaping how the world tracks progress on biodiversity.

🍀Today we held our monthly call bringing together CBD Women’s Caucus members for policy updates, board updates, and initiative updates and open processes

The meeting covered SBSTTA 28, SBI 07, and UNCCD COP17, with updates and reports from these events. We also covered our collective preparation for COP17 from registration and events to communications and policy as well as the Kunming Dialogue, which begins next week.

We also heard updates on our initiatives, including open processes and opportunities for Caucus members to get involved. Breakout rooms are becoming a regular part of our monthly calls a chance for the community to connect, get to know each other, share the great work they’re doing locally and globally, and find opportunities to collaborate.

🎙️ We’re pleased to share the recap of last week’s side event « Lessons Learned from Gender Action Plans Toward the New UNCCD Strategic Framework » hosted by the CBD Women’s Caucus FARN, WEDO WEDO, and the Women & Gender Constituency Women and Gender Constituency for UNFCCC, at in Ulaanbaatar.
And in the midst of the blockage of gender, Rio Convention synergies, civil society engagement, and the future strategic framework from the negotiating floor, our speakers brought the conversation into a room that parties can’t block:
🔹 Ms. Ana Di Pangracio () set the stage — the interconnectedness of the Rio Conventions and the space for gender-responsive implementation across them
🔹 Ms. Amelia Arreguin Prado (CBD Women’s Caucus) presented the CBD Gender Plan of Action — the operational tool for Target 23 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework — and what the SBI-6 evidence shows about implementation gaps
🔹 Ms. Narine Hokobyana (Government of Armenia) shared Armenia’s national experience building gender-responsive environmental and land governance
🔹 Ms. Mwanahamisi Singano () presented the UNFCCC’s newly named Belém Gender Action Plan — its gains, its losses, and its explicit links to the CBD and UNCCD
🔹 Ms. Beth Roberts () closed with the hardest read of the three: what the UNCCD’s own Gender Action Plan needs to catch up, and what the Future Strategic Framework must get right

The CBD Women’s Caucus invites organisations, networks, and individuals to propose activities for the Women Hub at COP17 — a small, welcoming space inside the Blue Zone for exchange, collective learning and connection around gender and biodiversity.

We’re looking for facilitated conversations, peer-learning exchanges, storytelling and more; especially events led by women’s organisations and women from Indigenous Peoples, local communities and Afro-descendant communities.

🌿 Our July Newsletter is out!

From the closing sessions of our Armenian Women Taking Action for Nature training series to the opening rooms of SBSTTA-28 in Nairobi — the CBD Women’s Caucus was there, and so were you.

This month, we wrapped up months of capacity building with Armenian women preparing to shape the outcomes of COP17, closed the call for contributions to the Women Biodiversity Outlook, and carried gender-responsive advocacy straight into the negotiating rooms as SBSTTA-28 opened.

Together, these efforts are weaving a stronger, more connected global movement — one where women are not just present, but leading, deciding, and transforming biodiversity governance and the finance that sustains it, from the ground up. 💚

📢 On 10 August, the CBD Women’s Caucus took part in a side event « Shaping responses to the Global Review: a multi-stakeholder dialogue »

The side event, co-hosted by IDDRI, PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, Forest Peoples Programme, WWF, for Nature, GYBN, ICLEI, and the CBD Women’s Caucus, with Ms. Cristina Eghenter speaking on the panel on behalf of the CBD Women’s Caucus, alongside Ms. Juliette Landry (IDDRI), Ms. Josefa Cariño Taulí (), and Ms. Kirsty Leong (), moderated by Mr. Basile van Havre (IDDRI).

As the first Global Review of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework unfolds, the CBD Women’s Caucus underlined that translating its findings into action must be gender-responsive and inclusive:

🔹 The Global Review should not be a one-time event, but an inclusive, institutionalized « living cycle » for learning, adapting, and incrementing action
🔹 It’s not enough to have a Target 23 on gender equality — gender-responsiveness must run across the entire Framework, as per decision 15/6
🔹 The mid-term review of the GPA must be integrated into the Global Review of collective progress
🔹 Whole-of-society is not just a set of principles — it must inform and guide implementation, leveraging partnerships, dialogues, and multi-stakeholder platforms to accelerate action
🔹 Women’s roles and contributions must be counted and valued in the Global Review and in implementation over the next four years
