I’ve said 𝒀𝑬𝑺 out of excitement. At times out of loyalty. Sometimes because I felt I still had something to prove. Other times because saying 𝒀𝑬𝑺 felt necessary, even inevitable.

Some of those choices gave me a great deal. Others left me wondering where all my bloody time had gone.

Saying 𝑵𝑶 is much harder to do when you care about the people asking or when something that once meant the world to you is involved.

But I’m learning to pause before committing. To ask whether I believe in it 𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ, whether I have the capacity, and what I might have to put aside to make it happen.

Sure, I still get it wrong. Occasionally, spectacularly.

But I’m paying more attention to the right 𝒀𝑬𝑺𝒆𝒔 and getting a whole lot less apologetic about my 𝑵𝑶𝒔.

The truth and reality of life is that not all 𝒀𝑬𝑺𝒆𝒔 are good for us, and not all 𝑵𝑶𝒔 are things we will regret.

I spent decades learning how to make people want things. Need things. I admit I became rather proficient at it too.

Nowadays I'm increasingly interested in understanding what makes things worth wanting.

In a world obsessed with selling, consuming and chasing more, have we forgotten what actually matters?

Perhaps the greatest thing we're losing isn't our money. It's 𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑠.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧.

This year 2026, there were moments when I genuinely wondered whether everything I had spent years building had stopped working.

Work dried up. Money got tight. Doors I thought might open stayed firmly shut. I swallowed my pride, questioned my value, contemplated leaving the country, and wondered whether experience, qualifications and nearly two decades of hard work actually meant a damn thing anymore.

So I tore things apart and started again.

Not everything is fixed. Not every storm has passed. I'm still rebuilding.

But somewhere between the failures, the uncertainty, the work slowly returning, and my daughter unexpectedly climbing onto my shoulders while I sat at my desk, I realised something.

Perhaps starting again isn't always about getting back everything you lost.

Sometimes it's about finally understanding what you cannot afford to lose.

We often imagine ego as arrogance.
I've come to believe it's far more subtle than that.
Sometimes it disguises itself as confidence.
Sometimes as conviction.
Sometimes even as protecting the integrity of our work.
The difficult part isn't recognising ego in others.
It's recognising when it has quietly entered the room through us.

Ego can masquerade as confidence, conviction, or even creative integrity.

But somewhere along the way, we must learn the difference between defending our ideas and merely defending ourselves.

Perhaps creative maturity begins when we stop serving the ego — and start serving the work.
