On 12 June 2026, Cabinet agreed to introduce new regulations that will formalise the role of Data Protection Officers in Mauritius.

From January 2027, expectations around the role become clearer.
DPOsโ€™ responsibilities will include monitoring compliance with the Data Protection Act, ensuring appropriate security measures are in place, driving awareness across the organisation, and acting as the point of contact with the regulator. More structure is also coming around independence and reporting lines.

Even without the full regulations, the direction is clear and itโ€™s enough to start preparing.
