Are you a qualified tradesperson or technician considering a future in New Zealand?

Introduced in August 2026, the Trades and Technicians Pathway recognises relevant qualifications and practical work experience as part of the Skilled Migrant Category.

To qualify, applicants must meet requirements including:

✅ Employment or a job offer in an eligible trades or technician occupation, paying at least the applicable SMC wage threshold.
✅ A relevant qualification comparable to at least Level 4 on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework.
✅ At least 2.5 years of relevant post-qualification work experience in an ANZSCO skill level 1–3 occupation.
✅ An additional 1.5 years of eligible post-qualification skilled work experience gained in New Zealand.

There are also specific requirements for qualifications obtained overseas, including an International Qualification Assessment from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

The Skilled Work Experience Pathway, introduced in August 2026, provides an additional route to New Zealand residence for eligible skilled workers.

This pathway recognises relevant work experience, without requiring applicants to hold a formal qualification.

Some of the key requirements include:

✅ Employment or a job offer in an ANZSCO skill level 1–3 occupation, paying at least 1.1 times the applicable SMC wage threshold.
✅ At least 3 years of relevant work experience in an ANZSCO skill level 1–3 occupation.
✅ An additional 2 years of eligible skilled work experience gained in New Zealand, meeting the required wage threshold.

There are also specific requirements relating to when work experience was gained, and additional restrictions for certain occupations on the Amber and Red Lists.

If you were New Zealand's Immigration Minister for a day, what would you change?

We asked Woburn International CEO, June Ranson, this very question, and she had some interesting thoughts!

With over 30 years of experience in New Zealand immigration, June has seen firsthand how immigration policy impacts individuals, families, employers and the country's economy.

In this video, June shares her thoughts on how New Zealand could better attract the skilled professionals businesses need to grow and succeed. But since filming, she's had a few more thoughts she'd add to her list:

🔹 Partnership residence requirements: June believes the period couples must demonstrate they have lived together should be extended from 12 to 24 months. She recognises this may be a controversial suggestion!

🔹 Working Holiday Visas: While attracting highly skilled migrants is important, June also believes New Zealand needs people to fill roles that are difficult to recruit for locally. Working holidaymakers could help meet these workforce needs while earning money to support their travels.

These are June's personal views on potential immigration policy changes, not current immigration requirements.

🇳🇿 Thinking about making New Zealand your home? There are now more pathways to residence!

In August 2026, Immigration New Zealand introduced two additional residence pathways under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC).

Previously, applicants relied on the existing points-based pathway. Now, there are two more pathways to residence:

✅ Skilled Work Experience Pathway – A pathway for eligible skilled workers with relevant work experience, without necessarily needing a formal qualification.

✅ Trades and Technicians Pathway – A pathway for people working in eligible trades and technician occupations who meet the qualification and work experience requirements.

These additional pathways create new opportunities for skilled workers who may not have qualified under the existing points-based system.

New Visa opportunities for Indian Nationals.

From 20 October 2026, new visa options are available for eligible Indian citizens looking to work in New Zealand, with the possibility of staying for up to three years.

These opportunities are available to Indian nationals who have a job offer in one of the following occupations:

🧘 Yoga Instructor
👨‍🍳 Chef
🎵 Music Teacher
🌿 AYUSH Practitioner

Applicants must meet the relevant qualification and work experience requirements for their occupation.

It’s important to note that these visas are for individual applicants only. Partners and dependent children cannot be included in the visa application.

If you change jobs while gaining skilled work experience in New Zealand, does that mean you automatically have to meet the latest SMC wage threshold?

For most people, no.

If you change jobs during your skilled work experience, you will generally continue to meet the SMC wage threshold that was set when your skilled work experience first became eligible to count.

There is an important catch: your pay must continue to meet that applicable threshold. If it falls below it, that period of work experience cannot count towards your SMC application.

The rules around wage thresholds can depend on your pathway and individual circumstances, so it’s important to understand which threshold applies to you.
