Four Australian Group Performers Among NZB Filly of the Year Cast of 2025-26 💐

The NZB Filly of the Year Series has a proud history of putting high-class fillies on a path towards bigger and better things, and this season’s crop has lived right up to that reputation.

Among the fillies that contested the 11 prestigious Group races that made up the series this season, there have been two subsequent Group One winners in Sydney, a Group Three winner in Adelaide and a black-type placegetter in Queensland.

At the top of the list is the 2025-26 NZB Filly of the Year, Ohope Wins (NZ) (Ocean Park). The Lance O’Sulivan and Andrew Scott-trained star strung together consecutive wins in the Group Two Patrick Hogan Stakes (2000m), Group Two David & Karyn Ellis Fillies’ Classic (2100m) and Group One New Zealand Oaks (2400m) to take the title with 28 points, eight points clear of her nearest rival.

Attention will also shift to the 2026-27 edition of the NZB Filly of the Year Series, which will kick off with the running of the Group Three Sunline Vase (1200m) at Ellerslie on September 5.

Mega Ace on Target in 3YO Sprint Championship🏆💸

Mega Ace (Earthlight) proved a cut above the rest with a dominant display in the RM200,000 3YO Sprint Championship (1200m) at Sungai Besi on Sunday.

Mega Ace, who landed unraced, has now won seven of his 10 starts.🏇🎉

“That was his ‘final’ this campaign and he will now head for a well deserved rest,” said trainer Simon Dunderdale.

“He is unbeatable over 1100m but against his own age today, he is clearly the class horse in the race.

Mega Ace is a graduate of the 2024 NZB Ready to Run Sale where he was sold from the draft of Regal Farm for $75,000 to Esther Quan Hui Lim.

🚨Entries Open for Karaka 2027 🚨

Entries are now open for NZB’s Karaka 2027, with the action-packed week of selling set to take place at the Karaka Sales Centre from Sunday 24 January.

The 100th National Yearling Sale marked by Karaka 2026 set a new benchmark for the industry with turnover rising by almost $10 million, validating the strength of the refreshed sales format and depth of demand for New Zealand thoroughbreds.

Across a week that celebrated a century of New Zealand’s rich thoroughbred history, Karaka 2026 returned more than $96 million to breeders and consignors. Average, median, and clearance rates also lifted across every session, delivering exceptional results.

Karaka 2027 is set to build on the momentum of those record results, with Book 1 again to be conducted across two full days, Book 2 immediately following while the popular Karaka Summer Sale will take place on the Thursday.

“It was an incredible week all around celebrating the 100th National Yearling Sale, and a fitting end to the campaign seeing such strong results across the board,” commented NZB Managing Director Andrew Seabrook.

“With the first century of selling now behind us, we are entering the next chapter with renewed confidence in our sale format, our horses and the unmatched Karaka experience that so many enjoy each year.

“The buying bench in 2026 was the strongest it has ever been, with Australian spend up 12%, Hong Kong and China active, and New Zealand trainers from every region participating.

“Book 2 and the new Karaka Summer Sale were particularly well-supported, and we look forward to building on those results and collating another world-class catalogue with the best of the New Zealand yearling crop.

“The inspection and selection process is always an enjoyable time of year and our team looks forward to getting around all of the farms and seeing the next generation before they head to Karaka,” added Seabrook.

Curraghmore Set to Present Another Quality Karaka Weanling Draft 🐴✨

The tradition of presenting a quality selection is set to continue at Karaka on June 25 when Curraghmore offers its annual draft at the NZB Weanling Sale.

Farm principal Gordon Cunningham takes genuine pride in the process of preparing Curraghmore’s weanling draft, with this year’s six-strong offering again bound to attract the attention of a discerning buyers’ bench.

Colts by Sword of State, Ocean Park and Hilal, along with fillies by Super Seth, Satono Aladdin and Chaldean comprise a range of youngsters by proven stallions as well as a pair by two of the most talked-about freshmen with their first crops on the ground.

“We have always treated this sale with respect and take a lot of pride in offering weanlings with quality pedigree credentials as well as being good types,” Cunningham told RaceForm when discussing his 2026 selection.

“This year’s draft is essentially no different from those we’ve taken to the sale over the years – all six are individuals that I’m confident will stand scrutiny and have definite futures.”

The Karaka weanling sale has stood the test of time. It offers pinhookers a good selection of investment opportunities as well as those buyers looking for a decent young horse to take through to racing.”
