Group One Contenders Boost Ready to Run Excitement for Ohukia Lodge 🤩

Ohukia Lodge has a proud record and a well-earned reputation as one of the NZB Ready to Run Sale’s top vendors, so they don’t need much in the way of extra publicity – but a pair of Group One contenders over the next two weeks won’t hurt.

As they prepare to offer 21 two-year-olds at Karaka on 18 and 19 November, Ohukia will be represented by Cignetti (NZ) (Super Seth) in this Saturday’s A$3m Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington, then System Of Play (Ole Kirk) in the $700,000 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton on November 14.🏇💫

“They’re a couple of quite exciting graduates out of last year’s draft, and we can’t wait to see them step out in Group One races leading into this year’s sale,” Jamie Beatson said. “They were both really nice horses to sell last year. They were both great to do anything with, and they both had a fair bit of attention leading into the sale. It hasn’t been surprising to see them go on to show good ability.”

Their class of 2026 is made up of progeny of Hello Youmzain, Savabeel, Ace High, Hellbent, Ardrossan, Toronado, Brave Smash, All Too Hard, Street Boss, Hitotsu, Per Incanto, Super Seth, Pierata, Circus Maximus and The Autumn Sun.📙

“We’ve got quite a few really nice horses this year,” Beatson said. “It’s a good-sized draft and there’s a wide range of sires. I think there’s a few absolute belters in there, so I’m really looking forward to getting them up to Karaka and seeing what the buyers make of them.

“We were really happy with the way they all went at the Breeze-Ups. They handled it well and couldn’t have gone much better.

“I’m expecting the All Too Hard (Lot 132) to sell really well. He’s probably one of the headline horses in our draft this year.

“We’ve also got one for Waikato Stud (Lot 45) that’s by Savabeel out of Starvoia (Starcraft), so he’s a full-brother to the Group One winner Skew Wiff (NZ) (Savabeel). He breezed up really well too and you’d think he’d have a fair bit of interest in him.”

Pedigree Potential –NZB Ready to Run – Nicks that Click - Tara Madgwick 📝

In the lead up to the 2026 Ready to Run Sale Breednet have gone looking each week for some horses of interest that jump out on pedigree for various reasons.

The Sha Tin meeting on Sunday featured three smart winners sourced from this sale – Megastar Heart (Star Turn $825,000 sale-topper in 2023, now a winner of four from nine starts), Speedy Power (Farnan $150,000 in 2024, second HK winner for James Cummings) and Ka Ying Lightning (All Too Hard $200,000 in 2024). ⚡

The David Hall trained Ka Ying Lightning is now undefeated with three wins from three starts after scorching the turf over 1000m in 56.16 seconds and he has a half-brother to be offered at the sale next month. 🏇💨

🔸Lot 256 offered by Apex Bloodstock NZL is a gelding by Hello Youmzain (Fr) from Floating Heart and like his half-brother Ka Ying Lightning has shown good pace in his breeze clocking 10.68 seconds.

Progressive Chris Waller trained mare Soverato (NZ) was just off the top staying 3YO fillies last season, but powered to the line at Flemington on Saturday to land her first stakes victory in the Group III MVRC Tesio Stakes (2000m).

🔸The win added Black Type to the page for Lot 360, a Shocking gelding offered by Pertab Racing Limited from Macaroon Miss, who is an unraced half-sister by Proisir to Soverato.

The Group I VRC Victoria Derby is fast approaching and it can be tough to find a contender that is actually bred to do the job, so we’ve had a look at the Savabeel’s in this sale and highlighted two with the genetic blueprint to go far… literally!

Prima Park Poised To Make Ready to Run Sale Impact 💥✍ -by Dennis Ryan

During more than a decade as a vendor at the annual NZB Ready to Run Sale, Prima Park has risen through the ranks to become one of the go-to sources at the Karaka two-year-old auction.

Prima Park’s Ready to Run Sale ascendancy has coincided with operations becoming centralised on a property just north of Matamata purchased by the Van Dyk family nearly five years ago. Beginning with a blank canvas, they developed the 50-acre block as fit for purpose for Prima Park’s core activities centred on sales preparation, breaking and pre-training, complemented by a small racing string.🏇

Right now it’s a hive of activity as the finishing touches are applied to another Ready to Run draft featuring immense depth in pedigree, type and potential. Additionally buoyed by some impressive statistics from the pre-sale breeze-ups, farm principal Kelly Van Dyk has every reason to be looking forward to presenting her class of 2026 at Karaka on November 18 and 19.

Leading the charge for Prima Park at the Te Rapa breeze-ups were Lots 35 and 206, sons of Tassort and Zousain who were paired up to run their final 200m in 10.19 and 10.24 seconds respectively – the two fastest times in this year’s catalogue. Little inferior was Lot 165, a c**t by Lord Tanagloa, who recorded 10.39.

“It’s not just the time they run but how they do it, and I was happy to see all of ours step up and get through their breeze-ups so well,” Van Dyk observed. “Tassort and Zousain are two young stallions leaving plenty of winners, including up in Hong Kong. The Tassort is out of a mare by Hinchinbrook, who was the sire of one of our early Ready to Run graduates, the champion Hong Kong sprinter Beat The Clock.”

“There’s no reason why this shouldn’t be another successful Ready to Run Sale,” she commented. “The signs at lead-up sales have been good and buyers have so much faith in what NZB along with their vendors bring to the table.

Tesio Stakes Success for National Online Yearling Sale GraduateThe NZB National Online Yearling Sale is developing a reputation for producing stakes winners, with Soverato (NZ) (Vadamos) becoming the latest addition to that list in Saturday’s A$300,000 Group Three Powerflo Solutions Tesio Stakes (2040m) at Flemington.🏆

Soverato was offered by her breeders Rich Hill Stud during the 2024 edition of the sale, and trainers Katrina and Simon Alexander bought her for only $10,000. She was later purchased by OTI Racing after showing ability at the trials as a two-year-old.

Now trained by Waller Racing, Soverato has had 12 starts for three wins, three placings and A$368,700 in stakes – around 45 times her National Online Yearling Sale purchase price. 🙌🏻

“She was good,” Lane said. “She has been on an upward trajectory throughout her career and had been building to a performance like this, so it was great for it all to come together today.

Bought for $30,000 as a yearling at Karaka 2022, Tisse (NZ) (Belardo) lifted his career earnings to almost $250,000 with his first black-type success in the $100,000 Group Three Gee & Hickton Thompson Handicap (1600m) at Trentham on Saturday.

Tisse was a member of Woburn Farm’s draft in Book 2 of Karaka 2022, where New Plymouth trainer Allan Sharrock bought him for $30,000. He has now had 26 starts for six wins, eight placings and $245,095 in stakes – over eight times his purchase price. 💸

“He’s such a grouse horse, I just love him,” Myers said.

“I think the crew were quite confident to be fair, and you know when Allan’s confident that you can be confident too.”

Peter McKay holds a special place in the history of the TAB Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m), and the Matamata trainer set himself up for another shot at the $1m feature when Aquila Veloce (Capitalist) won the $45,000 Speight’s 2YO (1100m) at Ellerslie on Saturday. 💰

McKay won the very first running of the Karaka Millions in 2008, producing $80,000 purchase Vincent Mangano (NZ) (No Excuse Needed) to win from the extreme outside gate of 14.

Now McKay is on his way back to the Millions again, this time with Aquila Veloce, who he owns with his wife Kim and trains in partnership with son Shaun.

Aquila Veloce was offered by Riversley Park in Book 1 of Karaka 2026, where Peter and Kim McKay bought him for $95,000.🤝

“She’ll either go to the Counties Challenge Stakes (Group Three, 1100m) or the Wakefield Challenge Stakes (Group Two, 1100m) now,” McKay said. “I’d favour the Counties race – it would be nice to stick to going the Ellerslie way around as we build towards the Karaka Millions.”

Saturday’s win saw Aquila Veloce move into the top spot on the Karaka Millions order of entry, taking a narrow lead over Zanardi with $37,375.

However, there was another new name on top of the table just a couple of hours later. The Paul Shailer Racing -trained Iconic Scenes (NZ) (Better Than Ready) scored a debut victory at Eagle Farm, earning A$48,800.
