In early June we welcomed a business sustainability delegation from Hyderabad, India to Te Tai Tokerau Northland.

Led by Naveen Madishetty (PLANETCEO International), this visit was a collaborative effort between Northland NZ, the Consulate General of India in Auckland, Whangārei District Council, and the Far North District Council, and provided the opportunity for Northland businesses to connect directly with Indian industry and government leaders, explore new trade and investment avenues, and showcase our region's innovation and export potential.

Highlights from the trip included a pōwhiri and campus tour at NorthTec's Future Trades Campus, B2B meetings at The Orchard in Whangārei and Mahinga Innovation Park in Ngāwhā, a tour of the Ngāwhā Innovation and Enterprise Park, and meaningful engagement with the local Indian community in Whangārei.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this exchange a success!

Jodeci was a finalist in The Pick 2025 and is a māmā of three who stepped into business for the first time with her kaupapa, Rongomai Ora.

Her mahi centres around traditional Māori bodywork and massage — not to “fix” people, but to tautoko them back to wellness and remembering who they are.

She entered The Pick '25 because she’d never been in business before and wanted to build confidence and gain mātauranga to support both herself and her kaupapa.

What she found was much more than that.

In this video, Jodeci shares what the experience gave her — from growing confidence in business, to learning alongside others kanohi ki te kanohi, to the personal journey of “coming back home” to herself.

If you’ve been thinking about starting something of your own, or wanting to realign your kaupapa, this one is worth a watch.

Entries are open now and close Friday 3 July.

Last weekend, Northland NZ CE Paul Linton and Horticulture Specialist Jeanette Johnstone joined our partners in the Kaipara to host Hon Mike Butterick - Minister for Land Information and Associate Minister for Agriculture - alongside Kaipara Mayor Jonathan Larsen, Deputy Mayor Gordon Lambeth and Northland MP Grant McCallum, for a visit focused on water resilience, water storage and productive land use opportunities across Kaipara.

The visit highlighted some of the significant investments and initiatives helping build long-term resilience and economic opportunity for the region, including:

📍 Te Waihekeora Reservoir (Dargaville Dam) – discussing the role of water storage infrastructure in supporting communities, agriculture and future economic growth across Kaipara.

📍 Raupō Floodgate, Ruawai – hearing from representatives involved in the Raupō Drainage Scheme about the importance of flood protection and water management infrastructure for local landowners and productive land.

📍 Te Uri o Hau Avocado Orchard – showcasing the opportunities that reliable water infrastructure can help unlock for high-value horticulture and Māori-led economic development.

Water resilience remains a critical enabler for the future prosperity of Taitokerau Northland. Opportunities like these provide an important chance to share local perspectives and demonstrate the projects, partnerships and innovation helping strengthen our region.

A big thank you to Minister Butterick, Grant McCallum MP, Kaipara District Council, Te Uri o Hau and everyone involved in hosting and sharing their insights throughout the day.

One of the best parts about The Pick is hearing from people who started exactly where you might be right now.

Some came in with a rough idea.
Some weren’t sure if their business could actually work.
Some just needed the confidence to finally give it a go.

But over 10 weeks they found support, practical tools, new connections and a room full of people figuring it out together.

If you’ve been sitting on an idea for a while, maybe this is your sign to take the next step and explore it properly.

Applications for The Pick '26 are open now and close on 3 July.
