Looking after one another is something that connects all of us – at work, at home and across our community.

That was at the heart of Newmont Lihir’s inaugural Always Safe Day on 28 October, when employees and business partners came together to share stories, reflect and talk about the choices we can make every day to keep ourselves and each other safe.

We were honoured to have Newmont President and CEO Natascha Viljoen join us at Lihir and spend the day with our people as we reflected on what it means to live our Be Always Safe value every day.

Importantly, we also came together to honour and remember colleagues we have lost. Having family members and survivors join us made these moments especially meaningful and was a powerful reminder that safety matters not only to those who come to work each day, but to the families and communities waiting for them at home.

To everyone who participated, shared their experiences and helped make the day so meaningful - tenkyu tru.

🚨 Team Newmont Lihir in Lae for NERC 2026

Our Newmont Lihir Emergency Response Team (ERT) is now in Lae for the 2026 National Emergency Response Challenge (NERC).

The team has completed registering this afternoon and is attending the official opening ceremony tonight before taking on the emergency response challenge over the next two days (October 21-22).

Their participation reflects months of training, teamwork and commitment to safety, and provides an opportunity to benchmark their skills against some of PNG's best emergency response teams.

🚨 Team Lihir is ready for NERC 2026!

Behind every safe mining operation is a team of Papua New Guineans ready to respond when it matters most.

We are thrilled to share that our Newmont Lihir Emergency Response Team will travel to Lae, Morobe province this month to compete in the 2026 National Emergency Response Challenge (NERC) - Papua New Guinea's premier emergency response competition, facilitated by the Mineral Resources Authority.

Our team has invested many hours in training, skill development and preparation, demonstrating their commitment to keeping people safe and strengthening emergency response capability across our Lihir gold operation.

We congratulate our colleagues John Karigal (Captain), Leslie Mellie (Vice Captain), Mark Vaiba (Medic), Rex Konzel, Jacob Kaukia, Ronald Bev, Johnark Mikaive, Douglas Wilson, and Alphonse Arolupung for their final selection to represent Newmont Lihir and wish them the best as they progress through final preparations.

A Day in the Life of a Lihir Engineer: Thinking Global at Lihir

For Isaac Narimbi, Engineer, Mechanical Reliability, engineering is about solving complex challenges on a truly global scale. Drawn to Newmont's reputation as one of the world's leading gold producers, Isaac joined Lihir to grow his career in an environment known for innovation, collaboration and technical excellence.

Today, he supports critical assets within Lihir's Pressure Oxidation (POX) facility, one of the largest of its kind in the world. The scale and complexity of the operation provide unique opportunities to develop technical expertise, make high-impact decisions and contribute to the success of a world-class mining operation.

"Lihir operates one of the world's largest Pressure Oxidation facilities, providing a unique opportunity to manage critical assets at a global scale. Working on assets of this magnitude has accelerated my professional growth and exposed me to engineering challenges that few operations in PNG can offer."

Through projects such as upgrading pumps and vessels within the POX circuit, Isaac has strengthened his technical competence, confidence and ability to work across diverse teams.

First introduced to Lihir as a student from the Papua New Guinea University of Technology in 2015, Stanley was inspired by the scale and complexity of one of the world's largest gold mining operations. Years later, he returned to build his career in an environment that challenges engineers to think bigger, learn faster and grow professionally.

Today, Stanley supports the integrity and reliability of critical plant infrastructure, helping ensure assets remain safe, compliant and operational. Along the way, he has gained valuable experience tackling complex engineering challenges, collaborating with diverse teams and developing the confidence to take on greater responsibilities.
