RDAi Sessions — Recorded in the Wing Bubble

At Petter Berndalen’s RDAi-certified recording and mixing studio in Stockholm, SMT Wing diffusors surround performers to create what we call the “Wing Bubble.”

Musicians describe a greater sense of presence and finer audible detail in their own instruments, as well as a clearer sense of one another’s playing. This shared clarity strengthens the musical connection between performers.

Petter describes how this environment gives musicians clearer acoustic feedback from their instruments, while helping recordings capture fine detail and a more precise, three-dimensional placement of instruments in the soundstage.

This is the idea behind RDAi Sessions: connecting the musician’s experience during performance with the sound captured by the microphone(s) and heard during mixing and playback. By applying RDAi principles in both the studio and the playback environment, we help break the “circle of confusion” between recording and reproduction.

We are proud that Magico’s dedicated listening room was created using acoustic solutions from SMT.

Unlike an anechoic chamber, which is invaluable for measuring a loudspeaker in isolation, this room provides a carefully controlled yet natural nearfield broadband reflective sound field for critical musical listening.

The combination of reactive low-frequency control and temporally decorrelated early reflections offers very important psychoacoustic benefits—including neutral spaciousness, stable imaging, greater perceived resolution and reduced temporal masking

This year, the game changing Wing family celebrates its 15th anniversary. With its unique near-field diffusion technology*, it has contributed to one of SMT's strongest first halves in terms of order intake.

*Conventional QRD diffusors use time delays as a means of achieving spatial diffusion. The different well depths introduce controlled path-length differences, causing reflected sound energy to be distributed over a wide range of angles. In other words, the temporal delays are primarily used to optimize the spatial characteristics of the reflected sound field.
The Wing family is based on a different optimization strategy. Rather than primarily distributing acoustic energy in space, it is designed to optimize the temporal structure of early reflections. Using open-ended delay lines of varying lengths, it redistributes acoustic energy over time, creating a dense sequence of early reflections that remains effective even at very short listening distances.
In simple terms: QRD diffusors are primarily optimized for spatial distribution of sound. The Wing diffusors are primarily optimized for temporal distribution.

SMT is proud to present A New Circle for Sound
Reactive and Decorrelated Acoustics, integrated (RDAi)—is built on two interacting principles:
1) Reactive low-frequency control:
Superseding the traditional absorption-based approach to modal energy
2) Temporal Decorrelation of early reflections using the Wing family
Instead of conventional geometric scattering approaches, including QRD-based diffusors, or outright elimination

The goal is not to reduce acoustic energy, but to redistribute it in time, phase, and coherence.
Sound has long been trapped in a broken circle —
changing character as it moves from recording
to mixing to playback.
This work closes that loop .A continuous field of neutral, high-resolution spaciousness, where energy is preserved, phase is shaped rather than suppressed and EDT is allowed to meet — or exceed — T30.
Small rooms stop behaving like small rooms.
Translation becomes natural.
Space remains space
A clustered modal field becomes "fragile"in the sense that small reactive changes produce large shifts in modal behavior .This allows a cluster of tuned Helmholtz boxes as a passive EQ and create more coherent modal distribution across the room
