Two years ago, dairy waste, fish bones and chicken feathers were just disposal problems. Today in Ancona, ONE EARTH explains how to turn them into products the market actually needs.

At the ONE EARTH project conference in Ancona, a 15-partner Horizon Europe consortium is presenting its first concrete results.

Together, we are showing how residues from the dairy, aquaculture and poultry industries can be converted into genuinely valuable, commercially relevant products:

🧀 Omega-3 from cheese whey
Instead of being discarded, dairy waste is being fermented by microorganisms to produce omega-3 fatty acids.

🐟 Proteins from fish residues and chicken feathers
Extracted and processed into ingredients with natural properties, they are ready for use in cosmetics, food supplements and bioadhesives.

🌿 More efficient algae production
A newly developed cultivation system can produce algae-based compounds faster and at lower cost than conventional methods.

As Prof. Raddadi, Project Coordinator at Università di Bologna, put it today: "What one sector discards, another can use as its raw material."

That is the circular bioeconomy working as it should, connecting dairy, fishery and poultry industries with cosmetics, aquaculture, agriculture and healthcare in one closed, waste-free loop.

Our colleagues Zuzana_Okanikova and Radoslav Považan are representing PEDAL Consulting, speaking about the dissemination, communication and exploitation of the project activities. Proud to be part of this.

Follow the ONE EARTH page for updates as the project moves into its scale-up phase 👇

The INNOAQUA consortium is spending four intensive days not only reviewing project progress, but also stepping directly into the environments where sustainable aquaculture innovation is already taking shape.

Through technical visits, project partners are connecting research with operational practice and seeing firsthand what it takes to scale more sustainable food systems.

At SEA EIGHT in Portugal, partners are exploring algae cultivation and a land-base system.

While at PESCANOVA in Spain, the focus shifts to fish farming, seafood production and innovation in aquaculture practices.

These visits provide valuable insights that help advance work on:

🔹 sustainable aquaculture systems
🔹 algae-based food applications
🔹 circularity and sustainability
🔹 seafood prototype development
🔹 safety, regulation and social acceptance

Representing onsite is Kika Duchoňová, contributing mainly to communication, dissemination, exploitation and stakeholder engagement activities.

One thing is becoming increasingly clear - the future of food systems will not be built by a single technology or organisation alone. It will require collaboration across science, industry, policy and society itself.

This is where INNOAQUA comes in. 💙

Podujatie organizujú Ministerstvo hospodárstva Slovenskej republiky, Košický samosprávny kraj a Národná vodíková asociácia Slovenska, v spolupráci s partnermi z verejného aj európskeho prostredia.

Na konferencii sa zúčastní aj zástupkyňa Clean Hydrogen Partnership, pani Valerie Bouillon-Delporte, čo potvrdzuje silné európske prepojenie podujatia.

Náš projektový tím - Kika Duchoňová a Stanislav Laktiš - bude tiež súčasťou diskusie prostredníctvom projektu EASTGATEH2V - Hydrogen Valley Project, ktorý patrí medzi najambicióznejšie vodíkové iniciatívy v regióne strednej Európy.

O čom bude H2SK FORUM?

• rozvoj európskych vodíkových údolí a ich financovanie,
• budúcnosť vodíkovej infraštruktúry v EÚ,
• spolupráca EÚ a Kórey v oblasti vodíka,
• predstavenie Akčného plánu vodíka SR do roku 2030,
• nové digitálne nástroje pre vodíkový trh v EÚ.

Dva dni diskusií, konkrétnych dát a praktických skúseností ukážu, kam sa vodíkový sektor posunie po roku 2030 a akú úlohu v ňom bude zohrávať stredná Európa.

Podujatie je bezplatné vďaka podpore z európskych programov Plánu obnovy a Horizont Európa.

„Máme nápad. Chceme ho aj skutočne zrealizovať.“
Aj takto môže začať skutočná inklúzia.

Na workshope projektu Inspire project EU v Košiciach prišli dvaja mladí ľudia so zdravotným znevýhodnením s vlastnou iniciatívou.

Počas stretnutia otvorili témy, ktoré mladých ľudí so zdravotným znevýhodnením ovplyvňujú každý deň:

✔️ pracovná inklúzia a zamestnanie,
✔️ mobilita a dostupnosť služieb,
✔️ AI vzdelávanie pre väčšiu samostatnosť,
✔️ voľnočasové aktivity a socializácia,

Two days in Berlin. A room full of climate experts, policymakers and educators from across Europe. One question kept coming up: Are we training people fast enough for the green transition?

This week, our colleague Lea Bellušová joined partners and practitioners at , the annual high-level conference of the European Climate Initiative (EUKI) in Berlin.

This year's theme, 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, set the tone for two days of honest, ambitious conversations about where Europe stands and what still needs to happen.

We were there with project partners representing . A project that sits right at the heart of that question. It brings together vocational schools, businesses and institutions in Greece, Spain and Slovakia to build practical training programmes in 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘀, 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻. Because the green transition needs people who can actually work with these technologies.

Lea attended workshops on navigating climate scepticism and on carbon capture in Central and Eastern Europe. Both were thought-provoking and full of the kind of cross-border exchange that makes events like this worth attending.

A warm thank you to our consortium partners who made these two days so enriching: Silke Steinberg, Alexandra Tavlaridou and Rüdiger Klatt. Always a pleasure!

If you work in green skills, vocational education, or climate policy - let's connect.

GreenVOCnet initiative is funded by European Climate Initiative.

That moment when you realise the last two hours of work never actually saved? 😶

Anyone working in EU projects knows this feeling a little too well.
The document is gone.
The cursor is blinking.
And your brain is still trying to negotiate with reality.

First comes the silence. Then the disbelief.
Then the very specific heartbreak of losing something you know was good.

But after years of EU projects, proposals, deliverables and deadlines, we’ve learned something important: the second version is almost always better.

Not because losing work is fine. It's absolutely not.
But because by the time you rebuild it, you know exactly what you want to say.

That's not just resilience. It’s the reality behind EU projects.

Not just polished deliverables and final reports but people adapting, improvising, laughing through chaos and making it work together.

A huge thank you to Simona Baldovská, Lea Bellušová, Lucia Birasova, Stania Druskova, Kika Duchoňová, Stanislav Laktiš, Robert Miskuf, Miroslav Poláček and Marcela_Skubalova for being so wonderfully, courageously human throughout this whole series.

You made people laugh, nod, and feel seen. That's no small thing. We're lucky to work with you every day. 💙

That's all from us. No AI was emotionally involved in the making of this series.

💙Thank you for being part of , the most human thing we've made.

From Limeira, Brazil to the labs of Europe.

Yesterday, researchers and innovators sat in the same room to protect the lemons, oranges and grapefruits you consume every single day.

🍋 Think about how much citrus is part of your daily life: a glass of juice at breakfast, a lemon in your tea, a mandarin on the go.

It feels like something that will always be there. But citrus production in Europe faces serious threats like pests, shifting climate conditions, and pathogens.

Citrusbusters Project is the EU's answer uniting scientists, growers, and biotech experts from across Europe and Brazil.

🍋 Proud to be part of the team developing smarter, nature-based tools for early detection, plant resilience, and reduced reliance on chemical pesticides.

This week, the consortium gathers for the General Assembly, hosted at the 𝗦𝘆𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗼 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗮 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 - 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘀 (CCSM-IAC) facilities in Limeira, São Paulo - the heart of the world's largest citrus-producing region.

Partners reviewed progress across pest surveillance, biocontrol strategies, sustainability assessment, and stakeholder engagement.

Joining online were our colleagues Radoslav Považan, Letizia Piras and Simona Baldovská, presenting results from the communication and exploitation work.

In the first year alone, the project reached professionals from India to Cairo, Orlando to Cape Town through events, a promotional video, the first newsletter, and a steady stream of content keeping CITRUSBUSTERS on the radar of the citrus world.

The meeting brought some genuinely exciting moments.

🍊 Scientists from 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 can detect citrus greening disease with up to 79 % accuracy, just by reading microbial signatures from the trees.

🍊 Researchers at CNR Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche discovered that infected trees emit a subtly different chemical scent than healthy ones, and a field device that can literally "smell" the disease.

🍊What may be one of the most ambitious experiment of the year? CCSM-IAC planted 6,000 orange trees without pesticides to find naturally resistant varieties.

Science protecting something as everyday as a piece of fruit, that's what meaningful research looks like!
