Sometimes when you don’t go searching for something it just appears. This is one of those fruits. I spoke with my friend Alexandra Serrao about this fruit before I left and had zero intentions of actually enjoying it.

As I was walking back from the Penang Botanical Garden I saw it on the side of the road and couldn’t believe I was about to try it. It’s the end of the season and I felt so fortunate. The palms were right behind the roadside stall and the guys slangin’ them made the experience that much better!

This is the so called ice apple or Borassus flabellifer and many accounts state it was introduced to Malaysia but is native to many countries in Southeast Asia.

It not only quenches thirst but also helps with stomach digestion and I can honestly say it was delicious. It’s like a water filled baby jelly coconut.

Its cousin the toddy palm, Borassus aethiopium is also highly sought after for its large and delicious fruits.

I still cannot believe I got to eat this fruit. I’m only 9 days in my 2 month trek and I feel like I’ve been here for months.

Thank you Malaysia. Thank you Penang. Thank you tropical fruit.

Friendly reminder that while Raleigh is off adventuring in South East Asia, the nursery is open and running!

We are busy with summer tasks as we get ready for fall which looks like stepping up trees to bigger pots, taking cuttings, and lots and lots of seeding.

We do have a few specials going on as we need to make space on the floor:

Gorgeous Lemongrass, 1 gal -- $8
'Maher' Black Sapote Seedlings, 1 gal -- $12
Calabash Tree (Crescentia cujete), an excellent species for community spaces like schools, educational gardens, or outdoor workshop spaces, 1 gal -- $8

*Bulk orders are available*

Don't forget that in addition to fruits trees and tropical veg, we offer heirloom seeds!

Swing by any time between 9 and 1 on Saturdays or message us here on Instagram to make an appointment for another day.

See you at the nursery 😎

It’s that time of year again for our three part garden tour series!

Join us on Sunday May 24 for a morning of guided visits through two mature edible forest gardens that have been installed and maintained by Third Insight over the past 10 years.

We’ll cover a variety of topics including garden design, soil building, plant/tree care and more.

And of course, some fruit sampling for what’s in season!

The tour will end at the nursery where you’ll see our collection of mother plants and specialty species that we are known for growing.

Tickets can be purchased via the link below or by scanning the QR code.
