BEACH SAFETY TIPS
๐ Wear a life jacket if you do not know how to swim or when waves are large and conditions are rough.
๐ง Stay hydrated. On hot days, your body loses water through sweat, and it is important to replace those fluids regularly.
๐๏ธ Be aware that Lake Erieโs bottom is not flat. Sudden drop-offs from raised sandbars can occur. A good rule of thumb is to stay in water no deeper than your waist when playing with friends.
โ ๏ธ Currents in Lake Erie can be dangerous.
โข Any current flowing faster than 2 mph is considered dangerous.
โข Dangerous currents can exceed 5 mphโfaster than an Olympic swimmer can swim.
โข Currents can pull swimmers away from shore.
โข Piers, breakwalls, and other structures can create dangerous currents.
๐ If you get caught in a current:
โข Stay calm.
โข Flip onto your back and float.
โข Follow the safest course to safety and swim out of the current when possible.
๐ Learn the signs of drowning.
๐จ If you see someone who needs help:
โข Throw them something that floats, such as a life ring, life jacket, cooler, or inflated beach toy.
โข Shout instructions and encourage them to flip onto their back and float until help arrives or they can safely swim out of the current.
โข Seek assistance from park staff, lifeguards, friends, or others nearby.
โข Call 911 immediately.
