Fundraising in Real Time: Meet People Where They Are

Good fundraisers go where the donors are, not where they prefer to be.

Want to reach high-capacity donors? Remember: most are 55+ and value personal connection.

That means calls over texts. Cards over comments. Visits over views.

You don’t need to “go viral.”

You need to go personal.

At Columns, we help development teams realign their efforts to meet people where they are - and build lasting donor relationships. Learn more at ColumnsFundraising.com.

Year-end Fundraising Playbook Rule #5: Start strong.

Year-end doesn’t end on December 31. In January, your job is to:

✔️ Send receipts & thank-yous on time
✔️ Close audits and financial reports
✔️ Complete IRS and state filings (including Form 990)
✔️ Evaluate staff and board fundraising performance
✔️ Review board governance practices (meetings, conflicts, accountability)
✔️ Track efficiency and ROI metrics
✔️ Identify donor concentration risk and long-term sustainability

Strong follow-through builds trust and sets up a stronger 2026.

“Let’s just shut up and listen to the donor.”

Scott H. Sikes reminds us that the most meaningful fundraising conversations aren’t about perfect pitches or the art of “the ask” – they’re about genuine understanding.

At Columns Fundraising, we help teams build confidence and clarity in donor conversations, equipping them to listen well and develop more meaningful relationships.

If your donors talked more than you did, would your results improve?

Fundraising in Real Time: Fire Out and Hit Somebody

Scott H. Sikes's football coach used to tell him, “When you forget the play, just fire out and hit somebody.”

That advice stuck with him. In fundraising, it translates like this: when in doubt, just go see someone.

You don’t have to ask for money. Just get out of your office, make a visit, and let the relationship do the work.

The truth is, 90% of the money comes from people who’ve had an in-person conversation with someone who took the time to build a relationship.

At Columns Fundraising, we teach our clients how to make visits intentional, relational, and effective. Because nothing replaces face-to-face.

Year-end Fundraising Playbook Rule #4: Finish well.

🎥 Send a short thank-you video with a simple ask.
📱 Use text-to-give in the final days.
❤️ Focus on people, not just campaigns.

Don't rely too much on trends — focus instead on individual relationships.

Nothing replaces personal connection.

Columns Fundraising’s Scott Sikes recently facilitated a continuing professional education session for the University System of Georgia’s Chief Advancement Officers (CAOs) at Callaway Gardens Resort, ahead of the Georgia Education Advancement Council (GEAC) Fall Conference.

Scott presented “Getting Ready for Next Year: What We Learned From the GivingUSA Report About Individual Giving and How To Have More Substantive Conversations With Donors.” The session shared ways to develop deeper relationships with individual donors/couples in 2026.

If your team is preparing for the year ahead and wants to strengthen donor engagement, we’d love to help! Learn more at columnsfundraising.com.

Fundraising in Real Time: Send a Note ✍️

Write one handwritten note every week.

That note might be the only handwritten piece of mail your donor gets all week - or all year. A handwritten note literally jumps out of the daily mail pile and is almost universally appreciated.

A simple, thoughtful message creates connection. And connection leads to trust. And trust? That leads to gifts.

At Columns, we remind clients: Don’t underestimate the power of a pen.

Year-end Fundraising Playbook Rule #3: Make it easy to donate.

Want to raise more this year-end? Keep it simple:

1️⃣ Put your Donate button at the very top of your site. Every extra click = fewer gifts.
2️⃣ Mail still works. Send letters before Thanksgiving, and always include a Business Reply Envelope.

Simplicity removes barriers. Make giving effortless.

National Checklist Day + Year-end Fundraising Playbook = chef’s kiss for fundraisers.

Make sure this one’s on your checklist:
✅ Don’t leave stock & IRA gifts on the table.

❔ Do you know your DTC #?
❔ Have you reminded donors 70½+ about IRA giving?

The biggest year-end gifts aren’t always checks—help donors give in the way that’s most meaningful to them.
