With summer coming to an end and another New York winter approaching, fire departments will soon see an increase in responses to motor vehicle accidents and other roadway emergencies.

Our Traffic Management for Emergency Responders class is designed to help firefighters better understand their role in creating a safer environment while operating on the roadway.

Responding to the initial incident is only part of the challenge. Protecting firefighters, EMS personnel, law enforcement, tow operators, victims, and motorists from secondary crashes is critical.

This class focuses on the fundamentals of safely managing roadway incidents, including apparatus positioning, establishing a safe work area, traffic control, responder visibility, scene organization, and reducing the risk of secondary collisions.

One of the most important subjects a firefighter can study and understand is fire behavior.

Firefighters need to understand how a fire develops, how heat and smoke move through a compartment or building, and what those conditions are telling them. Recognizing changes in fire conditions can directly influence decisions involving fire attack, ventilation, search, flow paths, and firefighter positioning.

The fireground is constantly giving us information. The better we understand what we are seeing, the better decisions we can make.

After receiving numerous inquiries and hearing your feedback through our recent Facebook poll, Fingerlakes Fire Training is excited to announce that we have begun building our new portable Annual Firefighter Survival & Self-Rescue Competency Training Course!

Our goal is simple: bring critical firefighter survival training directly to your firehouse. Our portable training props will allow your members to complete hands-on self-rescue and survival competency skills without the need to travel to a training facility.

Departments will receive documentation showing each firefighter’s completion of the skills included in the program, which is being developed around applicable NFPA firefighter survival and self-rescue training recommendations and industry best practices.

Training will include critical skills such as SCBA emergencies, entanglement, restricted openings, wall breaches, Mayday procedures, low-air emergencies, disorientation, emergency egress, and other firefighter survival techniques.

Want to take it a step further? Departments can add a Vertical Escape Skills component featuring hands-on window bailout training using firefighter bailout systems and emergency ladder bailout techniques.

Instructor Burns spent Tuesday evening finishing up CPR/AED training for the coaching staff at Auburn Spartans Pop Warner.

This marks the third consecutive year that Fingerlakes Fire Training LLC has had the opportunity to provide CPR/AED training to their coaches. We would like to thank Auburn Spartans Pop Warner for their continued trust in our instructors and our training programs.

Having coaches trained and prepared to respond during a medical emergency is an important part of keeping young athletes safe both on and off the field.

We appreciate the continued partnership and look forward to working with the Spartans for years to come!

Over the last two Fridays, Fingerlakes Fire Training Instructor McNabb spent the day at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES, providing CPR/AED and First Aid training to members of their Special Education staff.

We want to recognize Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES for taking the initiative to provide their staff with this important, potentially life-saving training.
