We sell at two Philadelphia farmers' market:
Sundays from 10-2 at Headhouse Market (2nd and Lombard) from May to Dec. Tuesdays from 2-6 at Frankford Transportation Center (Frankford and Bustleton) from June to Nov.

Every season, we learn new lessons about fall broccoli production in an organic system. We make tweaks to our planting dates, our row cover strategy, and our plant spacing with the hope of growing more sellable crowns.

This year's biggest revelation was about variety selection, and the relationship between variety and succession timing. Both of these photos are from our 2nd succession: the disease-addled nightmare on the left is Belstar; the cute-looking heads on the right are Covina, growing just 5-ft away.

So, two takeaways for next year:
(1.) No Belstar in our 1st and 2nd successions
(2.) Covina is a broccoli superstar on our farm (thank you, High Mowing Organic Seeds !)

Now we just have to see what next year holds!

Due to the predicted heavy rains and high winds today, we've decided to cancel our Tuesday market at Frankford Transportation Center. We will be back on Tuesday, August 4th from 2-6pm with seeded watermelon, tomatoes, sweet corn, eggplant, peppers, and other summer goodies! Thanks for your understanding!

Sometimes, it feels like "wasp nest at the end of the tunnel" is a more fitting cliche for farming than the one about the light. But I've been trying to find moments to appreciate the hopeful and the whimsical.
In no particular order: corn silks in the dawn light; a barn full of curing onions; fall brassicas in the greenhouse (and the promise of quieter days ahead); and adorable fungi.
Anything in particular making you smile these days?

I had some special helpers with the scallions yesterday--Frankie helped with the bunching, while Alice kept the tally. I wish all of our harvest records were this festive!

We pick our peas into gallon pick buckets, and then transfer them to a cooler out in the field. In order to keep track of my spot in the planting, I'll often leave my hat on a t-post as a marker. Anyone else use the hat trick?

It's officially summer for Frankie and Alice, and the farm fields are bursting with June delights.
You now have TWO chances to load up on RMF veggies every week! (1.) Sundays at Headhouse (2nd and Lombard) from 10-2, and (2.) Tuesdays at Frankford Transportation Center from 2-6. Our Tuesday market kicks off on June 16th!
