TODAY IN HISTORY, SEPTEMBER 2nd

1901: Vice President Theodore Roosevelt used the phrase “speak softly and carry a big stick” at the Minnesota State Fair to outline his ideal foreign policy. Two weeks later, Roosevelt assumed the presidency, and his leadership was characterized by “Big Stick diplomacy,” which involves careful negotiation (“speaking softly”) backed by the implicit threat of a formidable military (“big stick”).

1944: During World War II, future U.S. President George H. W. Bush, then a 20-year-old Navy aviator, led a squadron in an attack on a Japanese installation in Chichijima. After his plane was shot down by enemy fire, he was rescued four hours later by an American submarine.

1945: Representatives of Japan signed a formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, officially marking the end of World War II. The document was signed by representatives from Japan and Allied nations including the United States, China, Great Britain and the Soviet Union. The day was officially named Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) by President Harry S. Truman.

1995: Michael Jackson achieved his 12th and final solo No. 1 hit with “You Are Not Alone,” a single from his ninth solo album, “HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I.” The track also holds a Guinness World Record as the first song to enter the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 1.
