Nights dropped into the 30s across Bellingham this weekend — the coldest since spring. That cold snap changes what is happening on your house.

Until now, the bugs on your south and west walls have been sunbathing. Stink bugs, boxelder bugs, western conifer seed bugs and cluster flies gather on warm siding on sunny October afternoons, and most of them stay outside. A genuinely cold night is the switch. They stop gathering and start getting in, through the gaps they have been sitting beside for weeks: around window frames, under siding, at soffits and vents, and wherever a pipe or a wire passes through the wall.

Here is the honest part. The good window for sealing and exterior treatment was August and early September. We are past it. Treating the outside now only catches whatever is still outside, and by November they are in the wall voids and there is not much to do but wait them out.

So, what actually helps you this week:

- Vacuum them, do not crush them. Crushing a stink bug is exactly as bad as it sounds, and boxelder bugs stain. Empty the vacuum outside straight away.
- Skip the bug bomb. It does not reach into a wall void, which is where they are headed.
- Do not let anyone treat inside your wall voids either. Insects that die in there draw carpet beetles, and carpet beetles really will eat your things.
- Screen the vents, fix the door sweeps, trim back whatever is touching the south and west walls.
- Anything you do seal now still counts for next year, and those same gaps are the ones rodents use.

None of these insects bite, sting, breed indoors or damage the building. They are a numbers problem, not a danger. If the numbers are the problem, that is worth a call.

They are looking for somewhere warm to overwinter. On sunny fall days they gather on south and west facing walls, then work into attics, wall voids and crawlspaces through gaps you would never notice.

When is a wasp nest dangerous enough to call someone?

Once the colony is established and defending itself — usually late summer, when yellowjackets are at peak population and most aggressive. A nest that looked harmless in June can be a genuine hazard by August.
