The warm weather is here! It’s important to check outside faucets to ensure that during the cooler months there hasn’t been any situation that could cause leaking or damage to your home. Below are some helpful steps to help with this.
Steps for Checking Outdoor Faucets:
Wait for Warm Weather: Ensure overnight temperatures stay above freezing to avoid re-freezing. Locate Interior Shut-off Valve: Turn the indoor shut-off valve to the on position to send water to the outside faucet.
Turn on Faucet Slowly: Open the faucet slowly to check for leaks in the handle, packing nut, or where it connects to the house.
Check for Leaks: Look for dripping or spraying water. If the faucet leaks only when running, the packing nut may need tightening; if it leaks constantly, the washer likely needs replacement.
Check for Burst Pipes: Listen inside the wall for running or hissing sounds. If the faucet leaks directly behind the fixture, it likely froze and split.
Clean Up Debris: Inspect for debris or insect nests in the faucet nozzle.
