Sixty students with skills learned through career and technical education were recently recognized at SkillsUSA Council’s annual Signing Day, as they prepared to fill in-demand roles in the Lehigh Valley’s growing workforce, continue their education, or join the military.

“The room right here is filled with people that know how to build, repair, solve, create, design, weld, code, organize, protect, heal, and innovate. And no matter how crazy the world becomes, society will always need people to do things,” said Andy Hammer, Executive Director of SkillsUSA.

The graduating students will be entering fields including manufacturing, building trades, welding, plumbing, health care and sports medicine, culinary arts, graphic design, web development, and automotive technology. Many of the businesses and colleges where they are headed attended Signing Day to support them.

LVEDC recently hosted state legislators and other state and federal officials to share data, trends, and highlights of Lehigh Valley’s economic growth – including how state economic development programs helped to land the region’s largest investment ever.

“Lehigh Valley is winning generational investments because of programs that the state Legislature and other policymakers have put in place,” said Jaime Whalen, LVEDC Executive Vice President & Chief of Staff.

LVEDC hosts the annual legislative event to keep lawmakers informed, hear challenges and concerns, and ask legislators to support proposals to increase economic competitiveness.

Health care occupations are forecasted to grow in the next five years. To help meet the growing demand, St. Luke's University Health Network welcomed the first students to its new College of Health Sciences on May 18, creating a pipeline of talent to bolster its health care workforce, the leading employment sector in the Lehigh Valley.

The college offers associates degrees in radiology and respiratory care, and a registered nurse to Bachelor of Science in nursing pathway, along with general education courses. The curriculum is geared to adult learners, with the RN to BSN program offered fully online. Students will also have access to simulation and skills labs, study areas and library resources.

According to College President Mary Grace Simcox, The College of Health Sciences is intended to supplement, not replace, the longstanding partnerships St. Luke’s has forged with regional colleges and universities.

More than 71,000 people work in health care in the Lehigh Valley. The region’s health care ecosystem, which includes St. Luke’s, Lehigh Valley Health Network part of Jefferson Health, and Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network, is a key contributor to the Lehigh Valley’s quality of life.

For the fifth consecutive year, a middle school in the Lehigh Valley has won the top prize in the statewide What’s So Cool About Manufacturing® video competition. The annual competition, started by Manufacturers Resource Center 13 years ago, pairs teams of students with area manufacturers to produce videos that showcase today’s advanced manufacturing.

The student team at Nazareth Area Middle School won first place for their video about B. Braun Medical, Inc.

Saucon Valley Middle School was awarded second place for its video spotlighting Crayola.

Springhouse Middle School received the Statewide Viewers’ Choice recognition for its video featuring Mack Trucks.

The state competition occurred May 13 in Harrisburg, with 22 student teams from across the Commonwealth competing for statewide honors after advancing through regional contests.

For the Lehigh Valley schools recognized this year, the awards represent more than competition results — they reflect growing student engagement with the region’s manufacturers and the diverse career opportunities available in one of the region’s largest sectors.
