The debate is as old as digital retailing is: should dealers gate their tools — and if so, where?

New data from our most recent report settles it more clearly than ever.

Customers who follow a calculator-first sequence — where they use a payment tool before filling out a form — close at a 33% higher rate than those who hit the form first. The tradeoff is a slight reduction in form completion rate. But in a market where every sale counts, close rate is the number that really matters.

The data makes a case for leading with value. If you give shoppers what they came for first, the lead that follows is more likely to convert.

By Q4 2025, automotive retailers were hit with a triple threat:
→ Online shopping down
→ Lead volume down 11%
→ Click-to-call and chat engagement down 18%

In 2024, when leads dropped, click-to-calls picked up the slack. In 2025, both dropped at the same time — meaning shoppers aren't just choosing different channels. They're disengaging altogether.

Early 2026 data confirms the pattern. January engagement was down 12% YoY — the second-largest single-month decline after Q4.
