In January and June, Hanging Loose Press tried a little experiment: we said we would accept your work via email! As many of you know, we usually ask for poems to be sent snail mail so being able to connect with new poets and writers electronically was a great opportunity for us.

HLP is so very pleased to announce that Barahm Press co-founders Hyejung Kook and Cristiana Baik are guest editing issue 121, scheduled to be out in Spring 2027. Their curated section will feature original and translated work by Korean-American and Korean poets.

Starr Davis describes winning the 2025 Founders Award for her debut collection, AFFIDAVIT:

"I’ll never forget when they told me I’d won because I was standing in a freaking Arby’s line for my boss, grabbing her a sandwich. I was working for the University of Houston and it had been over a year since I saw my little girl. She was only three years old. And I was in this really horrible custody battle for her. And that’s pretty much how the book came about. The book was survival writing."

HLP is 60 this year, publishing poets who have been historically underrepresented in the publishing industry. Your continued support is what allows us to bring new voices telling their beautiful yet hard stories into the light.

Congratulations to Miguel Coronado, winner of the Founders Award, for his debut collection, AUTOEXILIO. Coronado is a poet who balances both the Old and the New World with equal parts eloquence, skepticism, and inquisitiveness in order to tell the story of how we got here, and how we will get out.

All of us at Hanging Loose are mourning the loss of poet and artist Harley Elliott, who sent us his work over many years from his home, the place that informed his work and his life, Salina, Kansas. Besides being a writer and a painter, Harley was an explorer of the plains, a serious collector of arrowheads and other artifacts, and that absorption in nature often informed his poems. As did his sly humor, the deadpan scenarios that went along with his truth-telling about Kansas and the world. He died early in September of 2026.

Hanging Loose Press is now 60 years old; Harley was with us—part of the Hanging Loose family, as we like to say, sentimental as it may sound— for 57 of those years. He gave us his poems for the magazine (more than ninety in all), and his art for its covers, and the three collections of his poems we were so pleased to publish. Harley, we miss you.
