Springboro Tree Farms includes a sugar bush and walnut tree planting, a Christmas tree grove, a small orchard, an apiary and about 40 acres of forest and wetlands. Here we produce small quantities of maple syrup, honey, apple products and Christmas trees which are donated to charitable causes. The American Tree Farm System is internationally recognized. Certified Family Forests meet eight standards of sustainability and are typically managed for multiple purposes: water, wildlife, wood and recreation.

Yesterday it was our great pleasure to welcome another Wednesday’s in The Wild group from West Lafayette Parks and Recreation. The focus was Forestry for the Birds let by birders Becky and Larry Theller from the Sycamore Audubon Society of West Lafayette. Becky and Larry have been a huge part of our efforts to improve the habitats for migratory song birds during the past 3 years.

We just completed this year’s honey harvest. Only 120.5 gallons (about 1326 pounds). That’s down about 30 % from last year but that’s ok. We requeened every colony and are well positioned for winter survival.

Another successful honey harvest is complete thanks to Brian and Marvin for the expert help. The 42 honey supers we took off weigh in at about 50 pounds each. We’ll know more when we extract the honey this weekend but we’re estimating a yield of about 1200 pounds…. Less than in the past few years.

Great day at the pond. Caught several this size!

Oxalic acid v***r mite treatment… we are treating weekly as weather permits for four weeks. This should kill most of the mites. This is a much fatter and effective treatment than most of the alternatives. And it may be done with honey supers in place.

Monticello is White County’s first official Tree City USA! So with Earth Day and Arbor Day both less that a week away, the Monticello Tree Board and the Parks Department celebrated with a very interesting program of public information as well as a tree planting today. Great fun …. And always good to see young people discovering the wonders of nature.
