Magnesium deficiency in grapevines 🍇

🔍how to spot it and fix it late in the season

Did your petiole or leaf blade tissue test come back low in magnesium? Here’s what to do!

Symptoms: yellowing between the veins (interveinal chlorosis), sometimes reddening on red varieties. Magnesium moves within the vine, so you’ll see it first on the older leaves low on the shoots.

3 ways to fix it:

1️⃣ Soil: on acidic soil, use dolomitic lime (about 10% Mg) instead of adding more sulfur. Aim for roughly 50–75 lbs of actual magnesium per acre.

2️⃣ Drip irrigation: on high-pH soils, run Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) or a liquid magnesium product through your drip ( or broadcast on the ground if needed). Dolomitic lime won’t go through drip.

3️⃣ Foliar spray: for a quick less permanent fix, I prefer a chelated magnesium product (4–6% Mg) over the old-school mag sulfate tank mix. Follow the label.
Get ahead of it before it gets severe.
