Out in the vineyard, we’ve just finished pruning — shaping each vine for the season ahead. It’s slow, intentional work… the kind that requires patience, care, and belief in what’s to come.

And it’s not lost on us that this same spirit is showing up at home, too.

While we’ve been tending to the vines, our oldest daughter has been building something of her own — pouring her creativity into her Etsy shop, one doodle at a time. Each piece she creates has its own little story behind it… thoughtful, personal, and entirely her own.

It feels familiar.

Because every vine in our vineyard tells a story too — shaped by hand, rooted in place, and grown with intention over time.

Different paths. Same roots.

As our vineyard begins to wake up for a new season, we’re reminded that growth happens in small, steady steps — whether in the soil… or in a young dream taking shape.

There’s something special about this moment in the vineyard.

Pruning is done ✂️ — each vine carefully shaped by hand, setting the foundation for the entire growing season ahead. It’s quiet, thoughtful work… and one of the most important steps in the life of the vine!

And just in time! A heat wave has arrived, with temperatures climbing into the mid-80s to low 90s. All around us, neighboring vineyards are beginning to wake up — tiny signs of life returning to the landscape.

Budbreak is near!

This is where it all begins again — another season, another story, rooted deeply in Carmel Valley.

Something magical has been happening at Summerhill Vineyards, the estate vineyard of Dove & Sea… 🦉

An owl has started visiting our vineyard owl box — and it has returned every night! We’re hopeful it may decide to make this little corner of the vineyard home and perhaps even bring a mate along. If that happens, we could be lucky enough to see tiny owlets later this spring!

Fun vineyard tidbit: Barn owls are incredible natural pest managers. A single barn owl family can eat thousands of rodents in a year, which is one reason many vineyards install owl boxes as part of a healthy ecosystem.

If you turn the sound on, you can even hear our friend make a little call near the end of the video!

Now for the fun part… if our friend sticks around, it’s going to need a name!

2020 was meant to be our first estate Syrah vintage.

Instead, the world stopped.

Like everyone else, we navigated the uncertainty of a global shutdown — and just as harvest approached in August, California was on fire.

Wildfire moved through our community and came right up to our property. Firefighters saved our home and vineyard — something we will always be grateful for.

When we were finally able to return to the vineyard, we made the painful decision to remove our estate fruit from the vines due to smoke exposure.

We dropped our fruit — but not our dream.

Earlier that season, before the Carmel fire began, we had harvested Syrah from Argyle Vineyard in South Monterey County. That fruit became the foundation for this wine — a resilient blend born from a year that tested everyone.

Some vintages are remembered for their ease. Others are remembered for what they endured.

We’re honored that our 2020 Syrah has now been awarded 92 points from Wine Enthusiast.

Wine has a way of holding time.

These grapes were harvested in 2021—when the days felt full and fast, and moments like this passed almost unnoticed. Tiny hands reaching up, just days before harvest.

She is one part of Âmes Sœurs—the “soul sisters” this co-fermentation is named for. A quiet presence in the vineyard, woven into the story, and folded gently into the life of the wine.

Nearly five years later, I’m still enjoying this wine and reflecting on how something so fleeting can be preserved so completely.

“This wine’s name translates to ‘Soul Sisters,’ which is a nod both to the proprietors’ two daughters and the cofermentation of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc that resulted in 50 compelling cases. The penetrating nose suavely integrates berry, cherry, and toasted wood aromas. Chiseled, long-lasting tannins frame joyous black cherry, peppery, and mushroom flavors on the palate.”— M.K.
