THIS is what a serious bed bug infestation looks like.

This photo was taken from the underside of a mattress in a mobile home right here in Southern Iowa.

Bed bugs are excellent at hiding. They work their way into mattress seams, furniture, cracks, crevices, baseboards, and anywhere else they can stay hidden between feedings.

By the time an infestation reaches this level, a can of store-bought spray isn’t going to solve the problem.

If you suspect bed bugs, the sooner you treat them, the easier they are to eliminate.

Bed Bugs Don’t Just Hide in Beds.

These bed bugs were found hiding inside a work boot.

Many people don’t realize bed bugs can hitchhike in shoes, clothing, backpacks, purses, luggage, and other personal belongings. If you’ve been in an infested home, hotel, apartment, or workplace, they can easily travel with you and end up in your own home.

To help prevent bringing them home:

* Inspect shoes, bags, and clothing after visiting an infested location.
* Avoid placing personal items on beds or upholstered furniture.
* Dry potentially exposed clothing on high heat for at least 30 minutes before washing.
* Regularly inspect luggage, shoes, and storage areas if you’ve traveled recently.

Early detection is the key to preventing a small problem from becoming a major infestation.

Don’t Ignore the Signs of Bed Bugs

Those tiny black spots in this photo aren’t just dirt—they’re bed bug f***l stains, one of the most common signs of an active bed bug infestation.

Other signs include:

• Small blood stains on sheets
• Live bed bugs hiding in cracks and seams
• Tiny white eggs and shed skins
• Itchy bites (not everyone reacts)

The sooner bed bugs are identified, the easier and less expensive they are to eliminate. Waiting usually allows the infestation to spread to more rooms and belongings.

If you think you may have bed bugs, don’t panic—and don’t throw out your furniture. A professional inspection can determine the best treatment plan.

The lone star tick has been linked to Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS), a condition that can cause people to develop an allergy to red meat after being bitten. In some cases, eating beef, pork, lamb, or other mammal-based products can trigger an allergic reaction hours later.

While not everyone who is bitten develops AGS, reported cases have increased as lone star ticks have spread across more of the United States.

The best protection is to avoid tick bites:
