This photo was taken from the underside of a mattress in a mobile home right here in Southern Iowa.

Bed bugs are excellent at hiding. They work their way into mattress seams, furniture, cracks, crevices, baseboards, and anywhere else they can stay hidden between feedings.

By the time an infestation reaches this level, a can of store-bought spray isn’t going to solve the problem.

Bed Bugs Don’t Just Hide in Beds.

Many people don’t realize bed bugs can hitchhike in shoes, clothing, backpacks, purses, luggage, and other personal belongings. If you’ve been in an infested home, hotel, apartment, or workplace, they can easily travel with you and end up in your own home.

To help prevent bringing them home:

* Inspect shoes, bags, and clothing after visiting an infested location.
* Avoid placing personal items on beds or upholstered furniture.
* Dry potentially exposed clothing on high heat for at least 30 minutes before washing.
* Regularly inspect luggage, shoes, and storage areas if you’ve traveled recently.

Early detection is the key to preventing a small problem from becoming a major infestation.

Other signs include:

• Small blood stains on sheets
• Live bed bugs hiding in cracks and seams
