Farewell to the Classic 1D Barcode?

The familiar striped barcode you see on every product may be nearing the end of its era. After more than 50 years of reliably scanning UPC and EAN codes at retail checkout, global standards groups like GS1 are driving an industry-wide shift to 2D barcodes (like QR codes) with an early 2027 target for adoption at point of sale.

Why the change? 1D barcodes are limited in how much data they can hold, while 2D codes can store rich, traceable information — from ingredient lists to authenticity data — and are easily scanned by smartphones and modern scanners alike.

For businesses, that means:
✔️ Upgrading scanners and POS systems
✔️ Updating packaging to include 2D codes
✔️ Enhanced inventory, traceability, and customer engagement

Still using basic 1D scanners like the Honeywell Hyperion 1300g or Zebra LI4278 / LI3608 for linear barcodes? They’ll keep working — but you’ll want 2D-capable devices to stay competitive.
