Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Here. Now What?

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is an environmental policy framework that shifts the cost and responsibility for managing packaging waste from taxpayers and local governments to the companies that place products on the market. Under EPR, producers typically help fund the collection, sorting, recycling, and recovery of packaging materials.

The rise of โ€œunderconsumption coreโ€ is a welcome reminder that helping the planet doesnโ€™t always mean buying the newest, trendiest alternative. It also means keeping the materials we already use in circulation.

Lightweight PET bottles and containers (look for the #1 in the triangle โ™ณ) are safe, resealable, fully recyclable, and made to be remade. Studies show PET can be recycled repeatedly into new bottles and containers.

So, when a PET bottle ends up in a lunchbox, backpack, or gym bag:

โœ… Look for the #1
โœ… Empty the container
โœ… Place it in the recycling bin

When you recycle PET, you help it become something new, again and again.

Not All Plastic is Created Equal!
Plastics are a large family of materials with different chemical compositions and properties. Different types of plastics are designed for different uses, which is why a shampoo bottle, a food container, a car part, and a medical device can all be made from plastic but perform very differently.

Just as metals include steel, aluminum, and copper, the term "plastic" refers to many different materials. They all belong to the plastic family, but each type has its own characteristics and best uses.

Learn what makes each "plastic" different and which ones are recyclable.

While many plastic materials are technically recyclable, whether they are actually recycled depends on several factors, including the type of plastic, local recycling infrastructure, product design, and contamination levels. Determining recyclability goes beyond whether an item is collected by a loc...

โŒ Myth: โ€œPlastic bottles are bad for the environment.โ€ That claim overlooks the full life cycle of packaging and the environmental impacts of materials that would replace PET plastic, identified by the #1 in the triangle. โ™ณ

Plastics aren't the problem - plastic & other waste in the environment is.

Every Piece of Plastic Has a Victim

A discarded fishing net is often called "ghost gear." Once lost or abandoned at sea, it continues trapping marine life long after its original purpose has ended.

This heartbreaking rescue is a reminder that ocean pollution is not an abstract environmental issueโ€”it is a daily reality for countless animals. Entangled seals can suffer deep wounds, exhaustion, infection, starvation, and drowning. Many never escape.

According to the United Nations, millions of tonnes of plastic enter the ocean every year, while abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear remains one of the deadliest forms of marine debris. Though it represents a relatively small share of total marine plastic by weight, ghost gear is responsible for a disproportionate amount of harm to marine mammals, sea turtles, seabirds, and other wildlife.

Every abandoned net, rope, or plastic item can continue causing damage for years, drifting across oceans and silently turning into a lethal trap.

Preventing this crisis requires more than cleanup efforts. It calls for responsible waste management, sustainable fishing practices, stronger recycling systems, improved gear recovery programs, and policies that keep plastic out of the ocean in the first place.

Protecting marine ecosystems begins long before waste reaches the shoreline.

Every piece of plastic disposed of responsibly reduces the risk of another animal becoming trapped.

Every recovered fishing net helps restore safer oceans.

Every action that keeps waste out of nature contributes to healthier marine ecosystems for generations to come.

The ocean gives humanity food, oxygen, livelihoods, and climate stability.

Keeping it free from plastic pollution is not just an environmental responsibilityโ€”it is an investment in the future of life on Earth.
