Gardening season is back, and we never get our hands dirty without grabbing our first. Not only does their legacy stretch all the way back to the 1920s, they’re still leading the pack in innovation to this day. It’s been a privilege to help them in their pursuit. We did extensive ethnographic research around the country to help them perfect the dual-cut strategy notch that makes easy work of thick branches. Fantastic client, fun project, and now, we’ve got great gardens to show for it.

This took less than 9 months.

When DLS’s Advanced Development Department (pseudonym) sought to fast-track a groundbreaking technology that would transform blood analysis, they tapped us in for the job. We collaborated with their internal team to design, engineer, and prototype a sleek, research-use-only blood analyzer that automates workflows, processes more samples in less time, and delivers richer data—no manual slides required. Translation: this product could identify changes to individual blood cells, providing earlier diagnosis of diseases.

An improvement like this, and its potential impact, couldn’t wait. From user research to intuitive UX/UI design to rapid prototyping, we were proud to partner on a mission that’s changing the future of diagnostics.

Surgicure Technologies came to us with a big idea: make airway management safer for both patients and clinicians.

The Challenge
Unplanned extubations and facial pressure injuries are far too common today. Traditional tube holders and adhesive methods often fail under blood, sweat, and motion—especially in trauma and burn cases where the face cannot be used for fixation.

The Solution
We proudly brought together our industrial design, engineering, soft goods, and prototyping teams to work closely with Surgicure’s engineering and clinical teams to develop the HORSESHOE™ into a production-ready device. They worked tirelessly to deliver ergonomic grips and material textures that support one-handed operation, even with gloves and moisture.

The final design—now commercially launched as the HORSESHOE™—balanced clinical performance, safety, and manufacturability.

Surgeons often rely on audio cues to make critical decisions without taking their eyes off the patient. But with so many surgical devices with competing tones, clarity can get lost in the noise.

this challenge and knew their new family of orthopedic devices needed a usable and cohesive voice from the start, so we partnered with them to re-architect the sonic experience. To ensure we got it right, we embedded ourselves in the surgical environment to observe live procedures, interact with devices firsthand, and interview clinical staff to define the perfect balance of usability and experience.

The Challenge
Sound must be instantly intuitive in high-stakes, noisy environments

Our Solution
A unified sonic experience built from the ground up, maximizing usability while creating a modern, consistent sonic brand.

The Outcome
The new sounds allowed Smith+Nephew to ensure all product touchpoints (industrial design, UX, and sound) demonstrated a comprehensive user experience that considered the entire user ecosystem

When a simple lunchroom conversation about how “cheese cubes and beef jerky are the lunch of champions” turned into an actual beef jerky truck rolling into our lot, chaos and comedy ensued:

1. 😆 An impromptu PA announcement sent the office into an uproar as struggled to figure out exactly what to call a roaming jerky truck (“Beef jerky truck? Meat wagon? Beef wagon?”)

1. 🏃Several team members dropped what they were doing and rushed outside to meet Tommy’s Jerky Truck during its brief 15-minute window (shout out to Shane, Colton, Owen and Mike.

3. 🤦‍♂️ One unlucky PDer accidentally left his coveted beef jerky on the kitchen counter, which meant every co-worker mistook as a free sample and happily helped themselves.

Thanks for turning your lunchroom convo into beef jerky magic for the whole company and Joe Henry!

When we research for our clients, we know a computer and a conference room can only take us so far. So we go well out of our way to meet people where the insights truly live. From in-home research in Arizona to hospital observations in Europe, we’re passionate about understanding how your product can truly thrive with the end consumer.

With springing kicking in, we can already feel the itch to ramp up the outdoor projects again. And is at the top of our gear list. We know how much they care about making best product possible because we lived it. We were trenches with them, learning every nook and cranny of their products to help them create a standout design language that not only set them apart in a saturated market, but represented the integrity of the product itself.

We pulled design inspiration from the unique aesthetics of their tools, leaning into robust, geometric designs and intentionally exposed structural elements. The result even earned us a Green Industry Pros Editor’s Choice Award!

"We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents." 🎨✨

Our Industrial Design team hosted a painting party with the help of none other than THE Bob Ross himself (okay, maybe just a video and 2 uncanny lookalikes!).

With brushes in hand, creativity flowing, and plenty of ‘happy trees’ taking shape, our team left with fresh inspiration and their very own masterpiece!

Our talented Business Partnership Lead, Katie Mowery, originally joined PD to help build out our research offerings—and she hasn’t lost her passion for it! Recently, she returned to her roots during a class at The Ohio State University, sharing insights with students on the power of user research in business—how to integrate it effectively and the value it brings at every stage.

The students walked away with game-changing knowledge, and by the end of the session, they were lining up, eager for a chance to work with our team at PD!

We love opportunities to mentor, educate, and empower the next generation of innovators!

We’re excited to introduce our winter design intern, Hudson Hack! 👋🏻

Hudson is a senior Industrial Design student at the University of Kansas, and he’ll be joining our design team for the next few months. Hudson is eager to dive into the fast-paced world of product development, particularly in consumer electronics and sporting goods. After graduation, he’s aiming to combine his passion for design and golf by becoming a golf club designer!

When he's not at work or in class, you’ll find Hudson outdoors with family and friends or perfecting his swing on the golf course. We’re looking forward to seeing all the great things he’ll contribute during his internship with us!
