Stories Sell

If you really want to engage people when you are giving a presentation or reciting your 30-second commercial, share a quick story. Stories captivate people’s attention much more than sharing the same basic information. Further, a story helps them think of those who are similarly situated, which can become referrals for you.

So, share a story ... one from your personal experience ... one from the experience of a colleague ... one you have crafted from likely possibilities. It will make you more interesting and it will lead to more referrals for you.

Take Some Blame

In any situation gone wrong, there is probably some blame for everyone.

When a child spills his milk, the parent can still find fault in their own actions or inactions. They could have used a more child-friendly cup. Or not filled it quite so full. Or they could have paid more attention to the child. They’ll still be perturbed cleaning up the mess but should temper their displeasure with knowledge of their own shortcomings.

Given this, no matter what goes awry and no matter who is obviously to blame, take a little of the blame yourself. In the long run, people will respect and want to associate with you that much more – both serving to build your network.

You Are The Expert

Within your network, you may be the only person who does what you do. As such, no one knows more about your business, industry, or profession than you do. NO ONE!

So, as you conduct yourself within your network (even if you are relatively new in business), carry yourself with a certain swagger that serves to say, “I am the expert.” That confidence will result in more business for you.
