20 Years of Iron Merchant Challenge: The Process, The Origin, and All of the Creative Chaos with Joe Baer

Joe Baer is the CEO, Creative Director, and Co-Founder at ZenGenius, Inc., and the creator of the Iron Merchant Challenge! The Iron Merchant is a signature retail design competition held each year at the International Retail Design Conference (IRDC).

Now in its 20th year, the Iron Merchant Challenge celebrates visual merchandising as an integral part of the design process for brands, stores, and events. What started as a small breakout session in 2006 has grown into a main attraction at the opening-night cocktail party!

From industry leaders to educators, students, and creative design influencers, we have created some truly wonderful memories here over the years.

We look forward to seeing you in Vegas for the 2026 (and 20th anniversary!) Iron Merchant Challenge!

We are game day ready!

Designed with custom embroidery, handmade buttons, sewn scarves, careful patchwork, and so much more, we fell in love with this family tailgate visual merchandising story. Our team of designers, creators, makers and visual merchandising experts came in clutch with the assist on this vignette for Michaels Stores' Easton location.

We believe localization is an essential part of building community and creating spaces that feel connected to the people and places around them. Bringing a little local spirit into the story makes the experience feel that much more personal.
