End of an Era

You may notice a bit of a change here at the w**ery next time you come and visit. The VERY BIG and dead catalpa tree that has been held up by the VERY Little elm tree had to be safely brought down before it happened naturally and potentially in an unsafe manner. Thousands of people have marveled at the size of the tree and also noticed that it was large enough and hollow on the road facing side to take pictures inside of it. A large piece has been kept as a remnant until we can figure out what to do with it. Come on out to see it and toast to it.

The past refuses to stay silent."

Come on out this Sunday, October 11, 2026, at 2pm to visit with local (Commerce, MO!!!) author and publisher, Susan V. Bailey, for her book signing. Join Susan as she follows the whispers through an old house in a tiny town that nobody has heard of. Follow her back to 1865, when the Civil War is almost over-and meet people whom the ghosts refuse to let you forget. As a bonus there will be plenty of great w**e, food, and music on a beautiful day.

It is cooling off, and the days are getting shorter. There will not be many weekends left for a comfy afternoon under the trees. This weekend we have three days of music.

Oh! Susanna, it's a hot one. Don't you worry though. It feels pretty darn good out here in the shade. I wonder if Stephen Foster was thinking about our current weather pattern when he wrote the song, Oh! Susanna, published in 1848? I know I would risk freezing to death right now. Anyway, where's my glass?

Looks like a nice weather window this weekend!

Reminder: There is a bridge out, so if you are coming in from the north you get a new scenic route. Of course, they are all pretty scenic coming out here. If you are not sure about directions just plug it into Google maps. It is updated with the road conditions. The map attached shows two alternatives, but if you look closely there is a third. You can see the bridge progress by using that path.

Coming in from the south is not affected.

Mmmmmm! Fresh grape juice from w**e grapes. If you ever get a chance to taste fresh grape juice from w**e grapes, jump at the opportunity. It is amazing how the same fruit and acid structure as well as the high sugar content translates to such a delicious beverage that is not w**e. Our granddaughter, Evie, was able to experience the juice firsthand last week. That stage does not last long around here. Within about a day or so this wonderful juice was turned into w**e. In a couple of years, you all will be able to experience the adult version.

It is Labor Day Weekend. We have three days of w**e, music, and food for your enjoyment!

Unless you are the Duke boys, I would not recommend trying to cross the bridge on County Highway 318/Roth Drive about a mile north of the w**ery. Also, if you get that reference, you probably are due for a colonoscopy or some other medical checkup. LOL There are no signs up at Highway N yet. Construction just started this week.

After a few false starts the bridge work on County Highway 318/Roth Drive has begun. If you normally come in from the north through Scott City it is best to stay on Highway N all the way down to Highway E, take a left, and come in through Commerce just like in the old days.

If you come in from the south you will not be affected.

Another option is to take the new Kelso exit off I55 and go left, stay on Highway PP regardless of what your GPS says, and you will come to the stop sign at Highway N. Go right down the hill and left on Highway E and come in through Commerce. This route takes the same amount of time as going through Scott City anyway.
