The Design of Cities Begins with the Design of Streets: Part One

In this rerecording of their presentation delivered at CNU 34, Victor Brandon Dover and John Massengale showcase new tools and essential reference material in the expanded second edition of Street Design, The Secret to Great Cities and Towns. The 2026 edition adds dozens of case studies and contributions from guest authors, including Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Carlos Moreno, Witold Rybczynski, Maria Sanchez, and Yodan Rofe. A new chapter, "Whose Streets?" covers both progress and setbacks from the past decade, challenging designers to put people first.
This session includes:
• the new Catalog of Essential Street Types
• new and reworked case studies from around the world
• a first-of-its-kind history of the design of Riverside Drive in New York
• how to leverage street design to make your community more lovable, livable, and valuable
