in 1911, Orville Wright set a record for unpowered flight in Kitty Hawk, taking off in his glider into 50-mile-per-hour winds. We are saddened to report that Tom Skerritt, forever remembered by aviation fans as Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf in Top Gun, has flown west at the age of 93.

Skerritt enlisted just after graduating from high school, serving a four-year tour of duty in the United States Air Force before moving on to Hollywood

Over a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, Skerritt appeared in over 170 film and television productions, including his unforgettable roles as Viper in Top Gun and Captain Dallas in Alien.
