We had a great visit and conversation with Mike Bolles for Senate today. We reached out to him concerning our crisis a few days ago. I admire his willingness to come see first hand our struggles due to NYS and the lack of attention to this matter.
Also a big thank you to Joe L Nauseef for connecting us with Mike. I’ve reached out to my own local reps with no response however Joe didn’t hesitate to help get us connected!
We need more local and state representatives willing to help small businesses and support our community ♻️

This is the email I sent to Senator Lea Webb with no response. I’ve been begging and pleaded. Thanks Jade for all the info and help!

As a women owned and operated redemption center, one of the few left in the county…. I beg you to please demand attention to this issue. I’ve reached out to your office many times with no luck or support. My center is processing over 200k containers a week and would do more and be successful instead of on the verge of closing each week. I’ve attached photos to show the large amounts we deal with. Also constantly broken down machines at grocery stores because they don’t want to deal with the mess and shouldn’t have to honestly. Dirty containers in the same facility as food is disgusting. (Another part addressed in the bottle bill)

Redemption centers are disappearing across New York.

More than 200 redemption centers have closed in recent years, and we're now averaging approximately 55 closures every year Albany fails to act.

Every closure means:

❌ Longer drives to return bottles and cans
❌ Longer lines at remaining locations
❌ More stores refusing volume returns
❌ Lost jobs
❌ Lost fundraising opportunities for community groups
❌ New York keeping YOUR deposit money if you can’t redeem your containers

The reason is simple: redemption centers are still being paid a handling fee (by beverage companies—not you) that has remained stuck at 3.5¢ since 2009, while costs have more than DOUBLED.

Without immediate action, more closures are coming. Which means less access for you.

We are asking New Yorkers to contact legislative leaders TODAY and urge them to bring the Redemption Center Lifeline Bills (S5820A / A6267) to the floor for an emergency vote before the legislative session ends.

New York could save at least $40 million and possibly over $100 million if the Legislature approves a bill to modernize the state’s “Bottle Bill,” according to a report.The report, from think tank Eunomia, was commissioned by a group of environmental, civic, labor and business organizations.

The handling fee that redemption centers are paid is 3.5 cents a container. This amount is regulated by NYS. This amount hasnt changed since 2009! This fee is paid by BEVERAGE DISTRIBUTERS as cost of doing business. Billion dollar distributors. NOT A TAX. NOT PAID BY CONSUMERS. We deserve to make a living wage while providing a service to our community and helping sooo many not for profits.
