🇺🇸 September 11 — We Will Never Forget 🇺🇸

Today, Harrison Township Fire Department joins fire departments and communities across our nation in remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We especially honor the 343 FDNY firefighters who answered the call and made the ultimate sacrifice at the World Trade Center. They climbed the stairs while thousands were making their way to safety—demonstrating courage, selflessness, and an unwavering commitment to others.

We remember the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, military members, and civilians whose lives were lost, as well as the countless first responders who have suffered and died from illnesses related to their service at Ground Zero.

343 firefighters. 343 heroes. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

From all of us at the Harrison Township Fire Department, we honor their memory today and always.

Captain Limon serves as our B Crew Captain on Ladder 1, and Captain Mason serves as our Department Training Officer.

FF Abner is stationed at HTFD Headquarters and is assigned to the Ladder Company. Blaze is an instrumental member of our team, and we greatly appreciate his hard work, dedication, and commitment to serving our community.

Last week, HTFD firefighters completed an intensive three-day Swift Water Rescue Technician course to enhance their ability to respond to water emergencies in our community.

Training began at the Corydon YMCA, where firefighters successfully completed a swim competency test before advancing to two days of hands-on training on the Blue River at White Cloud. Throughout the course, personnel were challenged with realistic rescue scenarios and learned advanced skills including self-rescue, victim rescue, rope operations, boat-based rescues, and moving water rescue techniques.

This specialized training strengthens our department’s ability to respond safely and effectively during flooding and water rescue incidents, ensuring we are prepared to protect the citizens of Corydon and Harrison Township. We are proud of the dedication and commitment our firefighters continue to demonstrate by pursuing advanced training to better serve our community.

A special thank you to Chuck Gunther with Off Duty Rescue for providing outstanding instruction throughout the course. We also extend our sincere appreciation to the Corydon YMCA for allowing us to use their pool lanes for the swim competency test, and to the private property owner along the Blue River for generously allowing us access to their property to conduct this valuable hands-on training. Your support made this training possible, and we are truly grateful!

Mutual Aid Rope Rescue – Narrows Road, Laconia

Yesterday at approximately 11:40 a.m., the Harrison Township Fire Department was dispatched on a mutual aid request to assist the Boone Township Volunteer Fire Department with a high-angle rope rescue on Narrows Road in Laconia. Initial reports indicated that a victim had fallen down a cliff and sustained injuries.

Upon arrival, crews located one victim approximately 40 feet below the top of the cliff who was already being evacuated by emergency personnel on scene. Two additional victims remained approximately 240 feet below the cliff’s edge, one of whom was uninjured.

Harrison Township Fire Department rope rescue technicians established a high-angle rope system and deployed three technicians with specialized rescue equipment to reach the remaining victims. Prior to our descent, an Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) employee had successfully reached the injured patient and was providing medical care.

Over the next several hours, rescuers worked together to safely complete the technical rescue, lowering the patient and rescuers to the Ohio River. There, the Elizabeth Volunteer Fire Department transported the patient by boat to a nearby boat ramp, where Harrison County Hospital EMS was standing by to continue medical care and transport.

One of the three victims sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. No other injuries were reported.

This incident required a tremendous amount of coordination, communication, and teamwork. We would like to thank all of the agencies that assisted with this challenging rescue:

• Harrison County Sheriff’s Department
• Indiana Department of Natural Resources

Incidents like this demonstrate the value of interagency cooperation and the dedication of first responders who train for these complex and demanding rescue situations. We are grateful for the professionalism and teamwork displayed by everyone involved, which helped bring this incident to a safe conclusion.
