Hiring takes time, energy, and focus, and most veterinary teams are already stretched thin.

When a key role is open, the impact is felt everywhere: in the schedule, the workflow, the team, and the client experience. But finding the right person is not just about filling a vacancy. It is about understanding your practice, your culture, and what kind of candidate will truly fit.

Blue Heron Consulting’s Hiring Services support veterinary hospitals with veterinarian, practice manager, technician, and receptionist vacancies. Our process includes a practice profile meeting, job ad and market research, candidate sourcing and interviewing, and support through the offer and hiring process.

Our goal is to reduce the time, effort, and stress of the candidate search so your team can stay focused on what matters most: caring for patients.

Culture is not just what is written in a handbook or posted on the wall.

It is what the team experiences in the middle of a busy day, how expectations are reinforced, how feedback is handled, and how people are supported when things get hard.

Practice Manager Foundations helps managers connect mission, vision, values, and daily behavior so culture becomes something the team can actually see and practice.

Because strong culture does not happen by accident. It is led with intention.

Leadership development does not have to wait for a title change.

One of the simplest ways to build confidence within your team is to create small areas of ownership.

This week’s Quick Win: identify one “champion” opportunity in your practice. This could be a team member who helps lead inventory organization, client education, Fear Free handling, dental compliance, onboarding support, exam room flow, or another area where they already show interest or strength.

A champion program gives team members a chance to contribute beyond their daily task list. It helps them build confidence, practice communication, and take pride in improving a specific part of the hospital.

Start small. Choose one area, one person, and one clear expectation.

Everyday leadership grows when people are trusted with meaningful responsibility.

June’s newsletter drops tomorrow.

This month, we’re talking about mentorship as a practical leadership habit, not just a formal training plan.

Because strong teams are built through the small moments that help people feel supported, challenged, and seen. A thoughtful check-in, a clearer expectation, a moment of feedback, or a simple conversation about growth can all help create stronger connection and confidence within the team.

Inside this month’s newsletter, we’re sharing practical insights and tools to help veterinary leaders make mentorship more intentional, approachable, and woven into the everyday rhythm of the practice.

Leadership in a veterinary hospital rarely happens in perfect, quiet moments.

It happens between appointments, during hard conversations, when expectations need to be clarified, and when the team is looking for direction.

Practice Manager Foundations helps managers build the practical leadership skills they use every day, including communication, accountability, team motivation, and decision-making.

For managers who are ready for more clarity and confidence, this course is a strong next step.

Your numbers should help you lead with confidence, not leave you guessing.

For many veterinary practice owners and managers, bookkeeping can quickly become one more thing competing for time, attention, and mental energy. But accurate, well-organized financials are essential for understanding what is really happening inside the business.

Blue Heron Consulting’s Bookkeeping Services are designed specifically for veterinary practices, using the AAHA Chart of Accounts and best practices for categorizing profit and loss statements. With monthly check-ins, expert analysis, and support from Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisors, our team helps turn your financial records into something clear, accurate, and actionable.

Because bookkeeping should not just be about reconciled numbers. It should help you see trends, identify opportunities, and make more confident decisions for your hospital.

Practice managers sit at the center of so much of a hospital’s success.

They help translate goals into action, support the team through busy days, keep systems moving, and often become the bridge between leadership, doctors, staff, and clients.

Practice Manager Foundations was built to support that role with practical training in leadership, operations, finances, culture, communication, and team development.

For managers who are new to the role, growing into more responsibility, or ready for a stronger foundation, this course offers guidance they can bring back to the practice week after week.

The next 24-week live online course starts September 3.

Mentorship does not always start with a formal training plan.

Sometimes, it starts by noticing people well.

This week’s Quick Win: take 15 minutes to learn how your team members prefer to be appreciated. Some people value public recognition. Others prefer a quiet thank-you, a handwritten note, help during a busy day, or specific feedback about the impact of their work.

When appreciation feels personal, it becomes more meaningful. And over time, those small moments help build confidence, trust, and stronger team connection.

Try one simple appreciation tool this week:
Create a “favorite things” list, ask each team member how they prefer to receive praise, start a staff appreciation board, or use the “5 pennies” method to intentionally recognize five positive moments in a day.

Small recognition can have a big leadership impact.
