Independence is something that can’t be bought or magically changed. I wish it could. It’s hard watching loved ones lose their independence and fight to reclaim it however and wherever possible. Little things like being able to cut up steak 🥩 on his own, is so important to my dad. He only has grip strength in his left hand, his right hand 🫱 is paralyzed. Right side was former dominant. It’s comical and slight scary to think that my mom Carrie’s a knife 🔪 but whatever works. Where’s my fellow sandwich 🥪 generation at?

I’ll call this “aging with dignity.” my dad is what is known as a left side hemi. He lost function of his left side when he had a stroke about eight years ago. He’s come a long way, but it’s still really important to make things safe for him around the house and to preserve his independence. Typically you would do grab bars on the wall, but that’s the right side in this bathroom so if that doesn’t work. A countertop is not really great either because if it gets wet, it’s gonna be slippery. I think we found this beauty on Amazon and my late husband installed it about five years ago. This is one more thing that gives us peace of mind. Estate planning attorneys often have a part of their practice where they work with with seniors that are aging rapidly and declining in their physical abilities. It’s important to know what resources exist to make things easier for both the clients that you serve and the families that they support.

My 87-year-old dad. A giant pair of Bose Bluetooth headphones. And a mission — I swear I love him, but I could not survive one more afternoon of 1950s tapes on repeat at volume 100. 😂

Here’s the thing though: it wasn’t about the fancy tech. It was finding the one simple fix, then practicing it over and over until it just… stuck.

That’s basically my whole job too. You don’t need more software. You need the right piece, and someone patient enough to help you actually use it until it’s routine.
