I’m tired of hearing law firm owners complain about paying for practice management software while having no idea how much money they lose to unbilled time, unpaid invoices, and disorganized files.

You’re running a business. It has overhead. Let’s do the math before we decide $160 a month is the problem.

Annual software cost

$160 per user × 12 months = $1,920 per user

$1,920 × 5 users = $9,600 per year

Annual billable hours per person

25 hours per week × 46 working weeks = 1,150 hours

For this example, I’m deliberately lowballing billable hours and allowing plenty of room for nonbillable work. In a well-run hourly firm, I expect each person in a billing role to bill at least 30 hours per week for 46 weeks a year.

Using 46 weeks also leaves six weeks for vacation, holidays, sick time, and other absences.

Annual billings from just three of those five users

Software as a percentage of annual billings

$9,600 ÷ $862,500 × 100 = 1.1%

Even if you collect only 80% of those billings

Collected revenue: $690,000

$9,600 ÷ $690,000 × 100 = 1.4%

Five people have access to the system. Only three generate billable revenue in this example. The subscription still costs less than 2% of collections.

This example covers the subscription alone; implementation, processing fees, and optional add-ons are separate expenses (so maybe we get to 2%).

A hallway conversation isn’t a workflow. Put the task in Clio, assign it, and give it a deadline.
2. “Signed AND paid. Then we start.”
Potential clients stay in Grow until they’ve signed and paid. Manage is where the work happens.
3. “Stop buying more technology when you haven’t set up what you already own.”
Get your Clio fundamentals working before adding AI, automation, or another subscription.
4. “There is money hiding in your Clio.”
Unbilled time, unpaid invoices, forgotten matters—you love finding money firms have lost track of.
5. “A feature nobody uses solves absolutely nothing.”
Turning it on isn’t implementation. Your team needs a clear procedure, training, and accountability—including that weekly Focus 90.

Still thinking about Clio Connects Charlotte. 💙

What a fun day!

I loved getting out of the usual Zoom calls and screens and actually getting to connect with other legal professionals, talk Clio, swap ideas, and nerd out about how technology can make running a law firm a little easier.

One of my favorite parts was hearing from a Clio Certified Consultant and getting those real-world insights that go beyond simply knowing where to click.

Because there’s a big difference between having Clio and actually knowing how to make Clio work for your practice.

I left Charlotte with a notebook full of ideas, a few new connections, and plenty to think about. 🍋

Over the next month, Clio will be rolling out mobile apps for Clio Grow, giving law firms a new way to stay connected to their client intake process while they're away from their computers.

That's a pretty big deal for attorneys who are constantly moving between meetings, court, consultations, and everything else that somehow ends up on the calendar. 😅

Clio Grow helps you organize and manage potential clients through your intake process. Now, mobile access means you can stay connected wherever your work takes you.
