Ever caught yourself reacting before you even knew why?

A few years ago I got to my parents’ lake house and found out my sister’s friends were sleeping in my bed. I went straight into an argument with her before I even stopped to ask myself why it bothered me so much.

Turns out it was never about the bed. I felt forgotten.

That’s the gap between reacting and responding. A reaction is instant and it’s driven by emotion. A response gives you room to choose who you want to be in that moment.
