A client reached out to me and ask me to help him create a brand new job description. He didn't know where to start. He had an idea what he wanted the role to do but that was where he was and could not move forward. I told him that he did not have to start from scratch. Most jobs have already been created - he just needed to review what is already out there and pull information from them to design the role for his organization.

As a general manager of his organization, he did not have the time to do this part of the process. I offered to handle the research and sent him five jobs that generally described the job he was looking to create and fill.

Do you love shortcuts?

Wouldn't it be great to skip all the steps in a recruitment process and just hire someone you just spoke to on the spot? I'm sure this has worked wonderfully well for someone out there; but I'm sure that someone has experienced skipping key steps in the recruitment process and wished they had not.

What are some key recruitment steps:
1. Initial Phone Screen
2. Interview with the Hiring Manager
3. Interviews with Other Employees that will be Impacted by the Person Selected
4. Debrief Meeting Among the Interviewers
5. Professional Reference Checks of the Selected Candidate
6. Review of their LinkedIn Profile - Recommendations, Endorsements, and their Activities
7. Contact Someone in Your Network that Knows the Candidate to Get Another Perspective
8. Conduct a Background Check and an Employment Verification via a 3rd Party Vendor.
9. THEN, make an offer when 1-8 is complete and satisfactory.

This takes an average of 6 to 8 weeks. But by doing your due diligence, the investment you put into your recruitment process will improve the results of your hire.

No matter how many times you may have done it, firing someone is NEVER easy. However if you do it right, it maintains the dignity of the employee being let go and it helps you walk away from that extremely uncomfortable situation knowing you did what you could do to help the employee successfully transition.

Here are some tips:
1. Make sure that by the time you let the employee go, it is not a complete surprise to him/her.
2. Prepare a transition package that will help the employee financially while they look for their next job adventure, that will give them peace of mind that they have health coverage during their search, and that will give them access to resources that will assist them in their job search efforts.
3. Prepare for your conversation, mentally and emotionally. There's no need to feel like a wreck - if you have maintained a good relationship with your employees in general, and if #1 is met, and you are well prepared with the best for item #2, know you have done your best in ensuring your employee gets to their next destination successfully.

Again, this process will never get easy, but having a plan that will help for a successful transition enhances the employee experience even at this stage of their journey.

Is someone on your team going on Maternity Leave and not sure how to minimize their stress as they figure out how to navigate through leave policies?

My AHA moment came when I created a leave schedule for an employee. It included any policies internal and within the state the employee resided that would provide her insight on how much time off she could take and what wage replacement coverage was available.

A simple document like that enhanced the employee's experience and perception of the company by 100%!

Dedicate time to really understand what your employee is asking for and wants, and give them what they want AND what they need.

Amplifying your employee's journey creates a better employee experience and better performance.
