โ€œYou donโ€™t have the time, and you donโ€™t have the resources, to mess it up.โ€

Thatโ€™s how commercial operations leader Lori Nemyier describes the pressure emerging biotech and biopharma companies face as they approach launch.

But the pressure isnโ€™t simply getting to market.

Reaching launch and winning at launch are two different things, which means companies also need to be prepared to execute flawlessly from day one.

That distinction puts commercial ops at the center of the conversation. Decisions about the operating model, data, ex*****on complexity, and organizational cohesion can shape whether a therapy reaches patients efficiently or struggles to gain traction.

In conversation with Marc Iskowitz on The Space Life Sciences Podcast, Lori shares four strategies for a successful launch.

โ€œThe industry has learned some lessons over the last couple years in terms of being pickier with capital investment decisions. I donโ€™t think thatโ€™s going to change.โ€

After a few difficult years for biotech financing, companies have become more selective about investment decisions and more disciplined about capital efficiency. For Jacob Lai this discipline is likely here to stay, even amidst the current biotech boom.

That means being careful about how capital is deployed at different stages of commercialization. Jacob shares his perspective on some of the decisions involved, including his biggest piece of advice for emerging biotechs.

What if you could market AI adoption to your team by segmenting them into personas the same way you market to HCPs or patients?

That's the premise behind Beghou's survey of 100 biopharma and pharma professionals on their personal and organizational AI readiness.

A primary finding: commercial team members are already experimenting with tools like Copilot and ChatGPT on their own but havenโ€™t integrated them into their workflows yet.

Just like HCPs and patients, team members don't all respond to the same message. The survey surfaced eight distinct AI adoption personas across the workforce.

Five stood out as the highest-impact opportunities for targeted intervention:

โžก๏ธ The Governor, who values safety, compliance, transparency, and process and is concerned about responsible organization use

โžก๏ธ The Enthusiast, whose excitement outpaces their grasp of what implementation actually takes

โžก๏ธ The Anxious Skeptic, who is worried about being replaced or being devalued

โžก๏ธ The ROI-er, who is unwilling to back AI without a business case and numbers to prove its value

โžก๏ธ The Swamped, who isn't against AI but is just too buried to add one more thing

Understanding these provides the basis for meeting people where they are to convert experimentation into supported, repeatable ways of working.

Data investment decisions can become overwhelming quickly.

There may be dozens of sources to consider, different stakeholders pushing for different priorities, and no simple way to compare the potential value of one option against the effort required to put it to use.

One way to bring more structure to the decision is to look at each option across three dimensions:

What could this data help the organization do better?
What will it take to acquire, integrate, analyze, and maintain?
Can it realistically be put it into practice?

From there, the options tend to fall into four groups:

High-impact opportunities that require relatively limited investment.
For example, better integration of existing data may improve targeting and patient identification without requiring a major new purchase.

Some higher investment opportunities can still have a strong business case.
A $1 million dataset, for example, may be worthwhile if it helps identify 10 additional patients for a $500,000 therapy.

Lower-impact options may still make sense when they are inexpensive and operationally simple to implement.

Higher investment options become much more difficult to defend when they add only marginal visibility or do not materially change decisions.

This decision framework can help make the tradeoffs clearer and focus decisions on where the expected impact is proportionate to the investment required.

See how to apply the framework: https://hubs.ly/Q04tH4v80

You know your current datasets arenโ€™t surfacing all potential patients with the rare disease your therapy addresses. But will adding another dataset actually help?

Signals for patients with a rare disease can be scattered across complex pathways and years of care. Before investing, it can be helpful to step back and determine what is limiting visibility of the right patients, such as:

Can you detect the markers and events that distinguish the patient journey?
Can you identify the HCPs and organizations shaping their journey?
Are parts of the journey missing across care settings or data sources?
Are you missing clinical detail, coverage, or connections across sources?

A decision framework can help assess the gap and identify potential responses:

๐— ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฎ: stacking on another claims dataset
๐˜: adding unstructured data sources
๐—”๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜†๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐˜€ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€: a different approach or better connections of existing sources

This gives teams a practical way to compare options and determine if added data, enrichment, linkage, or analytic refinement is most likely to improve identification of the right patients.

Before investing in more data for KOL identification, itโ€™s important to define what โ€œinfluenceโ€ means for the indication of interest. This makes it easier to identify the data sources needed to capture the relevant dimensions of influence.

For example, finding the right KOLs in Alzheimerโ€™s disease relies on understanding how physicians contribute across multiple dimensions:

Clinical decision-making and referral patterns
Treatment awareness
Care pathway shaping
Research and publications
Engagement with advocacy and community groups

Claims data alone often does not provide enough detail.

In complex and evolving treatment landscapes like Alzheimerโ€™s disease, a more complete view of KOL influence often requires multiple data types:

ClinicalTrials.gov
Journal publications
EHR data
Medicare data
Social media
Advocacy organizations
Specialty pharmacy data
Hub data

Mapping a multidimensional view of influence for the specific indication before investing in more data sources helps clarify whether the data will add value and aid with identifying the right KOLs.
