Oswald Avery helped prove that DNA carries genetic information — a discovery that transformed modern biology.

In 1944, Avery and his colleagues demonstrated that DNA, not protein, was responsible for transmitting hereditary traits in bacteria. Their experiments provided the first strong evidence that genes are made of DNA, laying the groundwork for modern genetics and molecular biology.

At the time, many scientists believed proteins were too complex for DNA to hold genetic information. Avery’s findings challenged that assumption and paved the way for later discoveries involving DNA structure and genetic inheritance.

Though his contributions were initially underestimated, Avery’s work is now recognized as one of the most important breakthroughs in biology history.

Did you know that there’s a possible link between ADHD and dementias such as Alzheimer's disease?

A 2025 study found a possible link between the brain make-up of people with ADHD and that of “old age-related dementias such as Alzheimer's disease”. Using a combination of MRI brain imaging and blood tests, the researchers at the University of Geneva compared 32 adults with ADHD to 29 adults without ADHD (in both cases, aged between 25 and 45 years).

What they found was that the ADHD adults had more iron in certain regions of their brain, along with higher levels of neurofilaments in their blood, both of which are markers for dementia and Alzheimer’s. While it was a small case study, it nevertheless paves the way for further research to determine if a reduction of iron levels in the brain of a person with ADHD could reduce the likelihood of developing dementias like Alzheimer’s down the line.

Carl Woese (1928–2012)

Carl Woese revolutionized biology by changing how we classify life on Earth.

Using genetic sequencing, he discovered that life is divided into three domains—Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya—rather than the traditional two‑group system. His identification of Archaea revealed an entirely new form of life, distinct from bacteria and often found in extreme environments.

Woese’s work introduced molecular phylogeny, using genetic data to map evolutionary relationships, which is now a foundation of modern biology.

Initially controversial, his discoveries reshaped evolutionary science and deepened our understanding of life’s origins and diversity.
