Martha Chase was an American molecular geneticist whose work helped answer one of the most important questions in biology: What carries genetic information?

In 1952, while working with biologist Alfred Hershey at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Chase co-conducted the famous Hershey-Chase experiment. Using radioactive labels to distinguish DNA from proteins in bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria), the researchers demonstrated that DNA, not protein, enters bacterial cells during infection and carries hereditary information.

Their findings provided some of the strongest evidence that DNA is the molecule responsible for inheritance, helping to settle a longstanding scientific debate. The experiment paved the way for later discoveries about DNA's structure and function, launching a new era in molecular biology.

Although her contributions were often overshadowed by those of her collaborators, Chase played a critical role in one of the most influential experiments in the history of genetics. Today, the Hershey-Chase experiment remains a cornerstone of biology education and research.
