Oswald Avery helped prove that DNA carries genetic information โ a discovery that transformed modern biology.
In 1944, Avery and his colleagues demonstrated that DNA, not protein, was responsible for transmitting hereditary traits in bacteria. Their experiments provided the first strong evidence that genes are made of DNA, laying the groundwork for modern genetics and molecular biology.
At the time, many scientists believed proteins were too complex for DNA to hold genetic information. Averyโs findings challenged that assumption and paved the way for later discoveries involving DNA structure and genetic inheritance.
Though his contributions were initially underestimated, Averyโs work is now recognized as one of the most important breakthroughs in biology history.
