Twenty-eight years in our current home, and this morning we walk through the new home with the builder โ room by room, slow, with a roll of blue tape.
Most of it will be small. A smudge on a baseboard. A door that catches. An outlet six inches from where it should be. Nothing that ruins a house. All of it easier to fix today than after the furniture is in and the boxes are stacked against the wall.
There's a version of this walkthrough where you nod at everything because it's beautiful and you're tired after months of decisions and you don't want to be the person pointing at a scuff. I understand that version. I've also learned what it costs in the long term.
The same walk happens in business, just without the blue tape. Somebody has to go room by room through the contracts, the licenses, the backups, the things everyone assumes are handled. It's rarely dramatic. It's a list of small things, caught while they're still small.
Beautiful and finished are not the same thing. That's what the walkthrough is for.
