Because of You, I Made It

It’s the last day of May.

And before I step into June, I just want to pause and say thank You.

Thank You for carrying me through every deadline, every hard conversation, every late night, and every small win I almost forgot to celebrate.

I made it through. Not on my own strength, but on Yours.

So here’s my prayer for the month ahead:

Bless this June with healing where I’m tired, strength where I’m stretched, and wisdom where the path isn’t clear.

Open the door to new ideas. New opportunities. And growth — spiritual, mental, and financial.

Whatever you’re carrying into June, friend, I’m believing it gets lighter from here.

A mom got a call from her daughter's voice. Panicked. Crying. Saying she'd been grabbed and someone needed money or they weren't letting her go.

So the mom wired the money. Her daughter was completely fine — she'd been at work the whole time.

The voice was AI-generated. Convincing enough to fool a mother who loves her child. And this is happening to families across the country right now.

Here's what nobody's talking about.

Everyone focuses on the voice clone technology. I understand why — it's terrifying. But the technology is just the weapon. Before a scammer ever makes that call, they need the ammunition.

Your name. Your daughter's name. That she's your daughter. Your phone number. Her voice samples from social media. Your city. Your family structure. Every single piece of that information is sitting in a data broker file right now — available for purchase, no background check required.

Your profile almost certainly includes your name, home address, phone number, your relatives' names, their relationships to you, your approximate income, and your property records. All of it packaged. Some of it sold for pennies.

So what can you do today? Set up a family code word — something random that only your people know. If someone calls claiming to be a loved one and can't say it, hang up and call that person directly. The scam runs on panic. A code word kills the panic.

The voice clone is scary. But without the data behind it, there's no way to target you in the first place. That's the real blueprint behind every one of these attacks — and protecting your family starts with understanding that.

𝗬𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗜 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗢𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘀𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

"How many leads did your business miss last week — and do you actually know?"
The room got quiet. Not because the answer was complicated, but because most of them had never thought to measure it. And once you start measuring it, the numbers get uncomfortable fast.

I spent 60 minutes walking through what AI is doing inside small businesses right now — not the hype version, the real version. Four use cases, the Front Door, Behind The Scenes, The CRM Database, and Visibility. Real operators. Real numbers. And a few moments where you could feel the room shift.

I'm not going to unpack the whole seminar here. But I'll leave you with three of the numbers that landed hardest and let you sit with them the way the room did.

Eighty-five percent of callers who reach your voicemail never call back. After-hours calls make up 35 to 40 percent of total call volume in most home services businesses. And it costs five to seven times more to acquire a new customer than to reactivate one you already have sitting in your CRM database.

Now read those three numbers again and ask yourself which one is quietly costing your business the most money this month.

That's the conversation I wanted to start yesterday. And based on the questions afterward, I don't think it's the last time I'll be having it.

It's the same question I want to ask you. After 35 years in enterprise technology, I've watched this exact pattern play out three times now — with the internet, with the cloud, and with mobile. Each time, a handful of operators moved early and quietly built an advantage. The rest spent the next decade trying to catch up.

AI is the next wave. And the gap is opening faster than any of the previous three.

So here's my question — and I genuinely want to hear your answer in the comments: if you run a home services business (or any small business, really), what's the one thing about AI you wish someone would explain to you straight, without the hype and without the jargon?

After 35 years in enterprise technology which included time helping several Fortune 500 companies navigate every major technology shift since the early '90s, I've learned to recognize a specific moment. It's the moment right before a wave breaks. Where the businesses who move look smart in hindsight, and the ones who wait look like they were standing still.

Small businesses like thise in home services are in that moment right now. And tomorrow, in front of a room full of small business owners that will include HVAC, plumbing, and electrical owners, I'm going to show them exactly where they are on the AI curve. Some of what I'm sharing will surprise them. One slide in particular will probably sting.

But that's the point. The owners who hear it now still have time to do something about it.

🇺🇸 Thirteen folds. 2.3 pounds.

That’s all a folded flag weighs in your hands.

But ask any Gold Star family what it weighs on their lap, and you’ll learn the truth.

It’s heavier than the world.

This weekend, while the grills fire up and the lake fills with boats, I’ll pause. Not out of obligation — out of memory.

I served. I came home. So many didn’t.

Memorial Day isn’t about thanking the living. It’s about remembering the names that never got to come back to a job, a wedding, a first day of school, a Sunday morning.

The ones whose chairs stay empty.
The ones whose folded flags now sit on mantels and in shadow boxes, watched over by mothers, spouses, and children who carry a weight the rest of us will never fully understand.

To those families — your loved one is not forgotten. Not by me. Not by the brothers and sisters who served alongside them. Not by a grateful nation that owes them everything.

Enjoy the long weekend. But before you do, say a name out loud. Remember someone. Honor them.

That’s the whole point.

"𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲."

It's the most common fear I hear from small business owners. And it's almost always wrong — but not for the reason you might think.

AI doesn't replace people. It replaces tasks.

Your dispatcher still dispatches. Your bookkeeper still keeps books. Your front desk still greets the customer who walks in the door. What AI absorbs is the repetitive work around those roles — the after-hours call, the appointment confirmation, the data entry, the routine question asked for the four-thousandth time.

The teams that resent AI are the ones it was introduced to. The teams that embrace it are the ones it was introduced for.

The right question isn't "𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘈𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦?" 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 "𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘴 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮'𝘴 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭?"
