Small business owners: three coverages to check
If you run a small business in Texas, these are the three coverages I check first: Business Owner's Policy (BOP) — bundles business property and general liability in one policy, usually the practical starting point for a small operation. General liability — covers claims such as a customer injury at your premises or damage to someone else's property. Workers compensation — covers work-related injury or illness for your employees. Texas rules differ from most states, so what you carry — or choose not to carry — should be a deliberate decision, not a default. Gaps usually hide in the details: a lease that requires coverage you do not have, equipment that has grown past your limits, or work you now do that your policy never described. The offer: a paid risk and insurance review at $400/hr — I review what you carry, flag the gaps and overlaps, and give you a written list of what to fix, keep, or drop. You take that list to any agent you choose. To book, call or message 469-265-1033. Texas businesses only.

Life insurance and final expense — the basics
Two questions decide most life insurance purchases: how much, and for how long? Term life covers a set period — for example, the years your mortgage, your children's schooling, or your working life still have to run. It is usually the lowest-cost way to carry a larger amount of coverage during those years. Permanent life lasts as long as premiums are paid and can build cash value over time, at a higher premium. Final expense insurance is different again: a smaller permanent policy, sized to cover funeral costs and final bills so those expenses do not fall on your family. Amounts are modest, applications are usually simpler, and it is often the practical choice later in life. There is no single right answer — there is a right size and a right type for your family and your budget. Not sure what you have, or what you need? ACA Open Enrollment starts November 1
Texas: Open Enrollment for 2027 health coverage runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027 on the ACA Marketplace. Many Texans qualify for subsidies that lower the monthly premium — sometimes by a lot — based on income and household size. You will not know what you qualify for until your actual information is entered, so do not guess based on a neighbor's price. A few practical points: enroll by mid-December for coverage that starts January 1; if your job coverage is ending, too expensive, or you have been buying direct, this is the window to compare; and help enrolling is free. I am a licensed Texas insurance broker in Flower Mound, and I can walk you through your options at no cost to you. Book a free coverage review: call or message 469-265-1033. Texas residents only.

Why "I'm not in a flood zone" is a risky gamble. 🚫🌊

I look at safety through the lens of probability and impact. Here is a startling reality: 25% of all flood losses happen outside of designated high-risk areas.

Many property owners assume their standard homeowners or renters insurance covers water damage, but it typically does not. Consider these numbers:

During a standard 30-year mortgage, a property in a 100-year floodplain is 27 times more likely to experience a flood than a fire.

Just one inch of water can easily cause upwards of $20,000 in property damage.

Standard NFIP policies have a 30-day waiting period before taking effect, so the time to review your coverage is before the storm is on the horizon.

Why AHIP Certification is Necessary (Beyond a State License). While a valid Life, Health, and HMO (LHD&HMO) license is a state-level requirement that authorizes you to sell insurance, it does not specifically cover the complex federal regulations of Medicare. AHIP (American Health Insurance Plan) certification is necessary for several reasons:

CMS Compliance: The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) require that all Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) sponsors ensure their agents are trained and tested annually on Medicare rules.

Federal Program Knowledge: Medicare is a federal program with specific marketing, enrollment, and compliance rules that differ from standard commercial health insurance. AHIP proves you understand these federal mandates.

Carrier Requirement: Most health insurance carriers will not contract with or pay commissions to an agent who does not have a current AHIP certification, as it serves as the industry "gold standard" for satisfying CMS training requirements.
