The 1st time you say this sentence to a prospective client, your heart will be racing, your mouth will be dry, and you’ll feel like throwing up.

The 2nd time you say it, that blood pressure will be a little lower. The nausea almost non-existent.

By the 3rd time, you’ll be kicking yourself that you’d ever do it any other way.

What’s the sentence???

“I take payment upfront for my services.” Or some variation on that.

I discuss this concept a lot with advisory clients and members of my FreshBooks Office Hours community.

And I have a lot of empathy around this topic. I did not require payment up front when I first started my own business. But now it is unfathomable to me to think that I’d leave myself exposed to unpaid invoices.

I love hearing my clients come back and let me celebrate with them when they start to change their payment model to getting paid up front. Such a huge win.
