Just a small reminder, JCWIFI and JCE/JC Co-op/Jo Carroll Fiber are entirely separate entities.

While we did have a short outage in-town Lanark yesterday which was resolved within a few hours, I understand that JCE/JC Co-op/Jo Carroll Fiber had a much wider spread and lengthier outage, at least based on the calls I received on our after hours support line last night.

While of course this will mostly reach our customers as I'm posting it on our Facebook, in case this can clear up any confusion in the future:

JCWIFI specific support line: 815-233-2138.

JCE/JC Co-op/Jo Carroll Fiber support line: 800-858-5522

We at JCWIFI are unable to see any information about JCE/JC Co-op/Jo Carroll Fiber outages beyond their outage map (found at: https://jcecoop.com/fiber-outage-map,) are unable to provide ETAs for resolution for their outages, and are in no way affiliated with them. Thank you!

Our work on Lena WT has wrapped up for the day and everyone should be up. If you are not, please power down your router and the power adapter for the antenna behind the router for a full five minute period, and if that doesn't fix it, give us a call or let me know here!

Update 10:30 am 4/16 - I'm confident the tower will stay up, even if it remains on emergency power, so I'll go ahead and call this the final update for this post. I also want to give a big shout out to our Field and Tower crews who worked really hard in pretty bad conditions to get all this running!

Update 8:30 am 4/16 - The northern Pearl City tower is back up on emergency power. It should hold for quite a while, and assuming utility power to the site is restored in the meantime, it shouldn't go down again. I won't mark this as the final update yet just in case, but we should be in the clear.

Update 5 pm - Looks like everything is up except for the northern tower location for Pearl City, the site with the downed electrical lines. I will update as soon as I have more info.

Update 11 am - Two tower sites in Pearl City - the southern site and the site in town, are back up now. The northern site has downed electrical lines around the tower making it unsafe to work on at the moment.

Update 10:30 am - While I have not been given an official update about the status, I just noticed that the Babbs Grove tower is back up at this time. If there are any other expected issues with that location I'll update this update right away, but from my end connections look solid.

Update 9:30 am - Two sites in Pearl City have been brought up on a temporary backup connection. We are expecting instability with this temporary link so please bear with us if it goes up and down while work continues, but in any case something is better than nothing!

Good morning everyone! I am very glad to announce we took no major structural damage, and a vast majority of our towers are up after the storm. We do have a few sites without utility power, according to the boss we are expecting to have many of these sites within two hours, pending of course utility power being fully restored.

We are expecting electrical fluctuations as ComEd repairs downed lines and poles.

The main areas that are affected now are Pearl City/Babbs Grove Rd, and a small area in the Galena territory.

Most importantly for everyone's day to day business, we do expect some of our high capacity links between towers to have been knocked out of alignment, the extent of which is unknown at this time. What this means for you is that some towers may become congested and experience slow speeds. I will be attempting to maintain a list here as I am updated of areas where this is to be expected at any given time so you all have the most update to date information on your individual services.

For those on towers that are down, we have no way of seeing signal strength or determining if any individual customer antennas have been blown out of alignment yet. So please watch this post for updates, and if you see that everything is all clear for your area and is still having issues, give us a call right away at that point.

Our office will be open til 5 pm, and I will be personally available after 5 pm, and we can be reached at 815-233-2138. Thank you and I hope everyone is safe!

Final Update: Boss just came and told me the issue is resolved!

1pm Update: I'm told we've 100% dialed in *where* the issue is, in addition to the previous discovery of *what* the issue is. It's actually two companies away from us, so not our upstream provider, but a peer to that provider. The boss is pushing them for a resolution or workaround now.

11 am Update: No update yet unfortunately, we are currently waiting to hear back from the upstream provider. We hope to have more information by 1 pm.

Update: While work continues, our upstream provider appears to have positively identified *what* is causing the issue. I should still have additional information around 11 am.

Good morning! We're monitoring an issue that appears to be stemming from a T1 Trunk provider in Chicago (backbone of the internet) which is causing several issues, mainly of which are dropped VPN and secure cloud service connections.

While we have identified that the issue is not originating from inside our network, we are doing what we can to work around, avoid, or otherwise solve the issue from our end. The division manager is currently working with the relevant groups to resolve this, and we expect to be able to provide an update around 11 am today.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! Thank you!

Good morning! If you notice certain websites, apps or services on the internet aren't working, it's due to an outage with Cloudflare. Cloudflare is a content delivery network, basically a large collection of servers around the country, which act as servers and hosts for many common things on the internet.

Some affected services include Twitter (X), ChatGPT, Spotify, League of Legends, indeed.com, Zoom, Square, Doordash, Microsoft Teams, certain Amazon services, certain Microsoft services, and Arlo, just to name a few.

I recommend keeping an eye on DownDetector.com (run by the people who run Ookla speedtest) to track the issue.

You may see issues accessing anything related to Amazon or Microsoft, such as Alexa, Amazon.com, Youtube, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365, Facebook, Reddit, and certain video games and other apps.

Wi-Fi 5 vs Wi-Fi 6: Why Upgrading Makes a Real Difference

If your internet slows down when the whole family is online or your streaming keeps buffering, your Wi-Fi might be the reason. Many homes still use Wi-Fi 5 routers, which were great a few years ago, but newer Wi-Fi 6 models are designed for the way we use the internet today. The difference can be surprising, especially if you have multiple devices connected at the same time.

Wi-Fi 6 brings faster, smoother performance and better coverage throughout your home. It handles busy networks far more efficiently, which means your phone, laptop, TV, and smart home devices can all share the connection without fighting for speed. It also reaches a bit farther, helping to reduce those annoying dead spots that Wi-Fi 5 sometimes struggles with. Another quiet benefit is that Wi-Fi 6 helps extend the battery life of phones and smart devices by letting them rest when not in use.

For everyday life, that means fewer slowdowns, clearer video calls, and smoother streaming, even when everyone in the house is online. It is also more stable in apartments or neighborhoods with lots of nearby networks, keeping your connection strong and reliable. In short, Wi-Fi 6 is built for the connected homes of today, while Wi-Fi 5 belongs to the era when we had just a few devices online.

Wi-Fi 7 is the next step beyond that. It is an emerging technology that takes things to a whole new level of speed and reliability, offering incredible performance for the future. But for most households right now, upgrading from Wi-Fi 5 to Wi-Fi 6 already makes a big difference you can feel every day.
