A rare Wm. Bond & Son (Boston) marine chronometer by Hutton, London.

Between 1892 and 1894, this instrument was used by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey to help fix longitude across the Southeastern Alaska territory's coastline. Precision timekeeping like this was the backbone of American maritime mapping in the 19th century - and this piece was there for it.

Fusee-driven with a spring detent escapement and bi-metallic compensation balance, housed in its two-tier mahogany case with brass banding. Original key included.
