As we're settling back in after a busy week of travel, we've been reflecting on our time at the South Florida Facilities & Management Conference. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with facility professionals about improving emergency preparedness and building safety.

One of the highlights of the conference was seeing Regan Goan present on the importance of effective emergency planning and how clear communication, preparedness, and the right tools can make a critical difference during an emergency. Thank you to everyone who attended the session and contributed to the discussion.

Thank you to the Pro Expos Group conference organizers and all the attendees who made the event such a success. We look forward to continuing the conversations and helping create safer facilities together.

How prepared is your school if the unthinkable happens tomorrow?

It's a difficult question, but one that every school leader, first responder, and community should be asking. Every school shooting is a heartbreaking reminder that protecting our students and educators requires more than plans on paper.

According to CNN's latest analysis, there have been at least 31 school shootings in the U.S. this year as of July 10, impacting both K-12 schools and college campuses. Behind every statistic are students, teachers, families, and first responders whose lives are changed forever.

Preparedness isn't just about having an emergency plan on a shelf. It's about ensuring that critical information is accurate, accessible, and immediately available to the people making life-saving decisions when every second counts.

No single solution will prevent every tragedy. But we can work together, have the uncomfortable conversations, and take meaningful steps to better protect our schools and communities.

What do you think is the biggest challenge schools face today when it comes to emergency preparedness?

Paul Timm, refers to "The Classroom as the Heart of the Defense" and does a great job explaining why an "inside-out" approach can strengthen K-12 security strategies and improve resilience across campus.

Effective school security is about building the right layers in the right order. As security consultants, we've seen too many one-size-fits-all approaches that result in significant investments for products without a comprehensive strategy. The most effective security programs begin with conversations, thoughtful planning, risk assessments, and a layered design tailored to each school's unique needs.

Where do you think schools should prioritize their security investments during this summer season?

The PASS 7th Edition Guidelines provide a tiered technical roadmap that shifts the focus from perimeter defense to protecting the classroom heart.

As we gather this July 4th for fireworks, parades, and celebrations, situational awareness isn't about fear. It's about confidence and giving yourself options before you need them. Knowing your exits, reading your environment, & having a plan before you need one.

Before you enter any event space this weekend, take 60 seconds:

❗Locate the nearest exits

❗Identify secondary egress routes

❗Note where the crowd naturally thins

❗Locate First Responders and Medical Stations

Once the fireworks start and noise peaks, these details become much harder to process in real time. Enjoy the celebration & celebrate with confidence.

Following any critical incident, questions often focus on what happened. Just as important is asking: Are we prepared if it happens here?

Recent reports surrounding the Wilmington hospital shooting leave many unanswered questions regarding security procedures, access control, and how the suspect was able to enter and later leave the facility.

While investigations will determine the facts, organizations should use incidents like these as an opportunity to evaluate their own security measures. Could an individual intent on causing harm bypass your screening procedures?

Preparedness begins long before an incident occurs.
