Homecoming was never supposed to be the finish line.

For two nights, we brought public health scholars, practitioners, consultants, researchers, leaders, and entrepreneurs into the same room. We talked honestly about what this field has required from us, what this season has changed, and what it means to move forward without building our next chapter from survival mode.
But the biggest announcement of Homecoming was not another event.

It was Public Health Joy University.

I wanted to build a professional campus where public health professionals could continue learning, but learning was only part of the vision. I wanted a place where you could expand your professional network, strengthen your skills, stay close to opportunities, and use the collective knowledge in the room to actually advance.

If you are looking for a new role, there should be people and resources that help you position yourself for it. If you are consulting, there should be conversations that help you get clearer about clients, contracts, pricing, and opportunities. Homecoming starts today.

And before we do anything else tonight, I want you to take a second and really acknowledge what it took for you to still be here.

Still in the work. Still caring. Still building. Still trying. Still imagining that there could be a better way to lead, serve, earn, and live.

A lot of public health professionals have been through difficult seasons. Jobs changed. Funding shifted. Opportunities dried up. Teams changed. Plans changed. And for many people, the identity questions came right along with it.

So tonight is not just another Zoom event.

Tonight is a chance to come back to the room, be reminded that you are not the only one, and start Homecoming with people who understand both the weight and the worth of this work.

We are celebrating what has been built, but we are also making room for what is next. That means conversations about leadership, visibility, support, opportunity, and how we move forward together.

We are 24 hours away, and if you come to PHJ Homecoming, I do not need the polished version of you.

I do not need the rehearsed answer. I do not need the perfect bio. I do not need you to come ready to impress anybody.

I want you to bring the real question.

Maybe it is, "I think I want to leave my job, but I do not know what I am actually moving toward."

Maybe it is, "I want to consult, but I do not know how to consistently get clients."

We are 48 hours out, and here is something I need more public health professionals to understand:

Your next opportunity may not come from another application. It may come from proximity.

It may come from a conversation with someone who understands your work and says, “You should meet this person.” It may come from someone sharing an RFP, naming a funding opportunity, introducing you to a potential collaborator, or helping you see that what you thought needed to be a job could actually become a contract.

That is why I care so much about the room.

There are too many brilliant scholars, practitioners, evaluators, consultants, and leaders trying to figure out their next move in isolation. You may already have the skills. You may already have the credentials. You may already have the credibility. What you may need now is access, insight, visibility, and community that knows how to move.

PHJ Homecoming is not about passive inspiration. It is about getting back in the room with people who understand the field, understand the stakes, and understand that leadership also has market value.

We are 72 hours away, and I want to speak directly to a specific kind of public health professional.

The one whose job ended, and now you are not even sure you want another version of the same role.

The one whose funding got cut and now you are trying to figure out whether this is the moment to pivot, rebuild, or finally explore another lane.

Most of us think of the shift from scarcity to abundance as a mindset exercise. Think more positively, see the glass half full. But the real shift is about control.

Here’s a reminder we don’t hear enough in this field: scarcity says, “I have to control everything or it will fall apart.” It’s why we hoard resources, micromanage, and refuse to delegate. We’re trying to protect the little we have. But when we hold on that tightly, we exhaust ourselves and signal to our team that we don’t trust them.

Abundance asks something different. It asks us to trust ourselves, our instincts, and our resilience. It asks us to trust our team to care about the work, even if they do it differently than we would. And it asks us to trust that solutions will come, even if we haven’t found them yet. Sometimes the result turns out better than what we had planned.

This isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about releasing the need to control every outcome.

If you’ve ever struggled to delegate, felt like everything depends on you, or caught yourself leading out of fear, this conversation is worth your time. Next time scarcity shows up, ask yourself: where am I not trusting? What would I do differently if I did?

Before you talk yourself out of registering, let me say this clearly:

You do not need to arrive at PHJ Homecoming with a polished introduction, a five-year plan, or all the answers about what comes next.

You do not need to already know whether you are staying in your role, leaving your role, pivoting into consulting, building something of your own, or trying to recover from a season you did not choose.

And you definitely do not need to perform here.

This is Homecoming. That means the energy is different. The expectation is not that you come in trying to impress the room. The invitation is that you come into the room ready to receive, reflect, reconnect, and think honestly about what your next season requires.

Let me be clear: I do not have a problem with free communities.

We are literally inviting you to Homecoming for free.

But there is a difference between being surrounded by people and being in a community that actually helps you move.

You can spend all day consuming information.

Another webinar.Another group.Another resource.Another conversation about how terrible everything is.

And still be in the same financial, professional, and emotional position six months later.

At some point, you need implementation.

You need people who are willing to make the introduction.

Apply for the opportunity.
Send the proposal.
Invest in themselves.
Take the calculated risk.
Share what is working.
Talk honestly about money.

And believe that surviving this season is not the highest thing available to us.

That kind of energy matters.Proximity matters.Because your environment influences what begins to feel possible.

This is the third part of what I mean when I say Rest. Reimagine. Rebuild.

Rest so you can hear clearly.
Reimagine so you can choose your next move intentionally.
Then rebuild around people who are actually willing to move.

Leading with abundance doesn’t mean pretending everything is fine.

Here’s what I’ve learned: you can name the hard thing out loud and still choose not to be consumed by it. “Yes, we lost funding. Yes, I’m concerned. Yes, I don’t know where we go from here.” That’s honest leadership. And so is the next part: “And here’s what we still have. And here’s how we’ll figure this out together.”

Little words matter. Swapping “but” for “and” lets both things be true. Your team doesn’t need you to be stoic or to have every answer. They need you to be grounded; because when a leader panics, the team panics. So put your energy toward what you can control: how you respond, what you protect, and how you support the people beside you.

Sometimes a crisis is also making space for something new. We get to grieve what’s been lost, and we get to build what’s next.

There are a lot of brilliant public health professionals who can absolutely deliver a consulting engagement…

…and have no idea how to consistently get one.

So the business becomes:

A former colleague refers you.

A friend knows somebody.

Somebody remembers you from an old job.

Then silence.

And three months later you are asking, Where are the clients?

Your expertise is not necessarily the problem.

You may have a proximity problem.

I have seen what can happen when you know how to have the right conversation with the right person. I have personally been in situations where what could have been a traditional job conversation became an opportunity to talk about contracting instead.

That kind of thinking is learned.

And sometimes you learn it because somebody in your circle says, "Wait. Why are you approaching it that way? Try this."

That is why I care so much about whom public health professionals are building around.

Who knows what you do?
Who knows what you want?
Who knows somebody who needs it?
